someone somewhere clearly had enough clout to force the shut down somehow based on what you stated.
After searching on Google it was shut down by reputation he gave up and lawsuit. Someone will probably buy out the trade mark though once it expires or buy the company directly.
In a lengthy statement Thursday, Omegle founder Leif K-Brooks said the service is closing because combating misuse of the platform is "no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically."
Leif probably made his millions and is now out.
Since he been sued I doubt he has any money. He broke and probably still paying people.
I'm split down the middle if shutting down Omegle was a good or bad idea.
I believe that Omegle blocked most VPNs and would record / take screenshot of webcams, with regular moderation, catching out offenders? Some arrests were made due to Omegle.
It was also boosted from age 13+ to 18+ only. I guess quite a few children would still go visiting the website, specially around the covid lockdown, even with that double opt in tick box. Too many where just ignoring it?
Some popular Youtubers even based their entire channel upon jump scaring / trolling / fake skipping / character voice acting or performing a talent like character makeups / magic / dj / rap / music / request a song for us to play, etc.
Being peer-to-peer, others could snoop the IP Address and abuse that with hacking or DDoS attacks, etc. Most just using it for scaring, by telling them their basic location.
It could of been updated more to be peer-to-server and an account login?
It was sued due to an 11 year old girl meet up with an adult predator after meeting on Omegle? Even though it says not to give out personal information. Well I don't think it's Omegle at fault there, but perhaps it's best for safety reasons to shut it down if that happens. Some serious messed up people used and had abused it.
R.I.P Omegle

The last time I was on Omegle was a half-hearted "help" raid asking "Are you _________?" "Tim" "Bob" "Frank"... I even forget the name we were asking for... it was like 9+ yeas ago... heh
Yep.. I remember those videos... that makeup artist was crazy good... Pinkstylist I believe

And that'll just get them to go back to where they usually predate upon children at. Never mind that they still do, just not as many. Because not every nonce can get a job at a school.
Hell statistically speaking your kid is more likely to be molested by a teacher or school janitor than by a pastor or a minister. Not so sure about a priest, rabbi or imam.
She showed up at Omegles house, threatening to post it to her instagram, if they did not shut down the platform. It was all so people forget about those videos.
The Internet... and people mostly on it... were a lot more exploring back then, or maybe it was smaller so it was easier to know about sites.
Now people stick to the same few sites and most of the Internet comes and goes away and there's only a few that know it was even there...
I wouldn't worry about it... you didn't miss much
