did air fryers ever move past the Mr. Dink stage?
We got one for a gift five years and some change ago, and it's just, freaking terrible. The only thing we can stand to use it for these days is fish, because fish is one of the few things that are ok with a tiny, half-assed crunch. Because that's what the thing does: it produces a tiny, half-assed crunch. Literally the broiler in the conventional oven does better, and it's not even close.
I tried making some French fries in one once, when it was new and I didn't know better. I looked them up in the recipe book that came with, which said to bake at (I foget, 425, 450, something like that) for 15 minutes, reapply oil, repeat two or three times. So I chopped up some potatoes, oiled 'em, put em in, 15 minutes, reapplied oil, repeated however many times I was supposed to, and they were literally crunchy on the inside--you know, RAW. SO I did another couple of cycles. IT'S ROAR! YOU CAN'T SERVE THIS TO PEOPLE! YOU'LL KILL SOMEBODY!!! Few more cycles. Fine. I'll eat these hot, raw potatoes I guess. Since I don't have the patience to cook and oil a bajillion times all day.
but then you'd just be shallow frying things in an over-priced pan wouldn't you?
it kinda annoys me when people cook potatoes in an oven on a tray and call them "fries" when there were not in fact fried... they're funny little wedges.
You can also cook food with high fat content. You can actually make crispy bacon in a microwave.
And the reason the center stays cold is because the microwave chamber is filled with interference patterns. It's not a uniform field of microwaves bouncing around in there.
Long story short, the ideal shape for food cooked in a microwave is a donut. Pro-tip: If you're heating up a bowl of something, dig a hole in the middle and it will reheat better.
But yes, Hot Pockets are the dumbest idea for microwavable food. Even with the crisping sleeve. They need a total redesign.
I find air fryers overrated, but cooking Hot Pockets is one area where they really do excel over all other methods.
Fried mushrooms do NOT work in an air fryer...
