Yes, X and X2 were quite a departure from the usual FF music.

XII was a wonderful return to the orchestral style, but with some modern elements mixed in.

You can find the XIII and XIII-2 and Lightning Returns OSTs on YouTube and they're back to mostly orchestral. I've been listening to the new XVI soundtrack and it's *all* orchestral.

But it's not like even the old VI didn't have some hard modern sounds in it either.
