Alice and Bob are stranded in the desert.
Alice is injured and cannot walk.
If Bob carries Alice to safety, they both stand a 31% chance of survival but if Bob leaves Alice, his chance improves by 9%.

What should they do?

Alice is stumped.

Bring Alice, if you don't make it, at least you will scr*w before dying
Is that a moral consideration?

How much would be good enough for you?...

And more to the point... do the people you'er around know what their % chance might be for you to help or not help them?
...
It would depend on different variables than just % increase in survival chance.
If this is really a question you mean to sincerely consider, then it might also be worth asking / considering what Alice wants, among other things.

Perhaps Alice has children that for some reason will die if neither Bob nor Alice make it out of the desert. In which case, Alice might want Bob to leave her so that he can make sure that her kids survive, especially if she thinks that it may increase his chance by more than just 9%.

If Alice tells Bob to leave her and go ensure her children have a future but Bob tries to carry her anyways and they both die in the desert, it no longer is clear what the morally correct decision would have been.

Unfortunately, the fact that other variables have not been included with the information provided by the problem does not mean that there could not possibly be other details but it is interesting to see how people reason through it with the limited information that they have.

Good question.
Well... I can tell you that I wouldn't ever go into the desert with Zoe or Mallory in the first place.

The answer should be "there's never a good enough % to risk leaving someone" if one wants to call themselves "civil" or "humanitarian" :lunar2019deadpanpig:

So you would let Alice die in order to save yourself ( Bob ) .... got it.

All the "prehapsing" in the world won't change what you really mean... shame... shame...
I don't agree with what the beta machine said in the video but I've already expressed my thoughts on this in the topic.

You can totally just lie but other people who view topics can read what was actually written.
I'm not Bob but even so, I wouldn't leave Alice behind.

You're not Alice, though; I'd never willingly go out into the desert alone with you to be in that situation with you in the first place. ...and maybe I won't worry about someone who forces me to go into the desert alone with them, being left behind.
Bob should leave Alice.
Here's the question though, what's in it for bob in taking alice? he needs some type of reward.:Blisk:

When they get home she lies down and Bob eats her I shouldn't have to explain that
isn't it obvious?

bob is actually a woman and alice is actually a man... and the best chance of survival is be staying put and feeling like they're entitled to being rescued.

at least that's what all the survival things tell me?
Bob should carry Alice in his stomach

Maybe one of them is a milk bard.
What difference would that make?

Glad you asked. I'm sure everyone else reading this will be as well. A milk bard is a specialist in music and milk, creating tunes which assist in the creation, collection, and preparation of milk; this includes from anyone or anything capable of being milked.

A call and response tune could even attract or call attention to animals and other things which are ready to be milked. There's no guarantee this would raise both Alice's and Bob's chance of survival to 100%, but up to 99% seems possible provided there is any chance at all; and there is apparently. While the percentages given for their survival do not detail what was enumerated, experienced milk bards might even be capable of a 99% survival rate with only 1% of the things available in that 40%.

Let's say Bob is a milk bard. What Bob could do, is move away from Alice until one of them can no longer hear the other. Then he could move around Alice in an increasingly outward spiral pattern whilst performing. This would allow Bob the Milk Bard (Level 7) to cover the greatest area. If Bob finds an animal, he can milk it and charm the animal to go to Alice with some of the milk he's prepared.

It's a bit harder if Alice is the milk bard. She could try to train Bob to be a milk bard, but he'd only be Bob the Milk Bard (Level 1). Alternatively, Bob could try carrying Alice as she uses her geolactilocation skills, and they could milk themselves if they become desperate. If they find a beast of burden, then Alice could ride the animal as they continue onward.

Well, for a day or so.
Alice insisted on following the GPS, when it was clearly leading them into the desert. It's all her fault.
