Question to those playing a female character
or playing a character of another gender.

Could you play a tabletop RPG as that character?

Why would I?
Is it a cosmetic only change or something that effects my stats? If there's a gameplay advantage I'll play a female character, otherwise (assuming there's some amount of self inserting) I'm picking male

The question was "could you" not " would you".

I guess I could if I really tried. But, that would be ackward as ♥♥♥♥.
yes
Already did. Played a sorceress and it was a lot of fun. I miss DnD. Character gender doesn't matter to me, I can play both male and female characters and have fun.
I play everything, if it makes sense and yes most of them could be in my tabletop games.

That's how I felt as well the first time hearing the question. Imagining living a life through the eyes of another gender. It's rare to see players do that. Yet GM's have to.

The question originated after watching this video (question was mentioned twice: 5:40 + 12:40)

Eh, I've played tabletop RPG characters of either gender over the years. As have other people in the groups I've played with. It's reasonably normal. Not sure what the issue is. /shrug

It's like asking an author "can you write characters of the opposite gender". And in both Asian and Shakespearean theatre, actors playing characters of the other gender was also pretty common. Not really a big deal until you get modern politics into things.

(that said, I'm more of a "roll-player" not a "role-player". I don't do stuff like fancy in-character speech/improv acting. Nor have most of the people I've played with. There's a wide range of "how people play tabletop RPGs." Watching groups of streamers, who are frequently skilled entertainers and do everything at 150% so as to be entertaining for their viewers, isn't really the typical group of tabletop gamers in my experience.)

If it's a online game, I won't purposely go out and create a female avatar. I will always try to create a character that looks closer to myself.
