I'd say, it does depend a lot on your understanding of the term friend.

Do you want somebody to talk to or somebody to play videogames with together?
Sounds silly, but the difference is actually huge, as some people do put gaming buddies and friends into different categories, treating each of them differently.
Gaming buddies are everywhere, finding them shouldn't be a problem, but friends.. That's not so easy anymore because this is a lot more about you, your approach, your behavior, and your willingness to invest energy and time into the friendship between the two or few of you, dependable on how many friends you do manage to make, keep, and truly cherish.
