Yes, there is, and it's called a general thread.

Nowhere near. Theglobe started in 1995 I think. (it's defunct now, a travel agency owns the URL I think).

In a way, sure - but 4chan isn't like Reddit where any individual can create a subreddit and thus you cannot generalize that one subreddit represents the whole Reddit.

Reddit has terminated founders and moderators of their own subreddits, some with even huge communities, to be controlled by Reddit. So it kinda seems like the same thing.

Fair point. But my point is, it's probably easier to characterize a huge platform that has 70 active boards than a huge platform that has 200,000 active boards.

Yeah, I don't have any experience with 4chan so don't know much about how that one operates. I do use Reddit, mostly for information, rarely posting anything there. There's definitely good information amongst all the junk, but they are a corporation with stakeholders. I just think it's important people keep in mind that the corporation's and stakeholders' best interests will take precedence over user's freedoms or expressions in a heartbeat.

Also, a somewhat unrelated, but interesting thing to take note of, is that while a corporation named Advance Publications remains the major stakeholder, Tencent does own a stake in the company, estimated to be around 5%.

Yeah, and speaking of user freedom, no platform is going to allow everything. 4chan has their own rules and Reddit has their own ones.
Tencent owns shares of a lot of companies and I think that's part of their business model.

What you conveniently failed to mention is that 90% of those boards are just reskins of one another, and in a majority of cases, they also share the same userbase across the board.

they're like those IT / scientist guys in spy movies or mystery movies / shows how are glued to the monitors / labs. They don't necessarily do anything in the show just are there and provide context or do stuff when needed / asked to / something peaks their interests.

I like the idea of it but it's a nightmare to post at. I can never pass the captcha and if I make the effort to try it like a dozen times and finally get through, the 4channers complain about spammers and delete my post.

They accept crypto to bypass the captcha but I'm not paying to use 4chan.

I love it, and I go there basically everyday. I mostly use /vr/, but sometimes also /x/ and /tv/. 4chan is the funniest website on the internet, and I cant get enough.
