Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
The miracle here is that you didn't swear off video gaming forever after playing that turd.

As far as I can recall, it was a card game called War. Video games did not exist at that time.
They're older than some people think. 1958's Tennis for Two is commonly considered the first video game, though by some definitions, you could go even earlier.

Though for a while, you would have had to go to the machine they were made on, so practically speaking almost nobody got to play them.
I can't say for certain, but I do remember playing Ski Free when I was really young on the PC, and every time the Yeti would pop out, I would get so scared.

I loved it. I got the remake recently and it was a complete letdown.

Will Crowther's "Adventure". Later, larger iterations known as Colossal Cave Adventure.

Play it here:

Hard to say.

Maybe Ernie's Big Splash or Gertrude's Secrets on dos. Or maybe Mixed-Up Mother Goose.
Oh, God. Long suppressed trauma flooding back.

NONE of my family could ever get past the first screen.

My first video game was the one that came into the pinball arcades as a prototype in 71 -72

Asteroids like but shooting UFOs and not asteroids... play it long enough and it would reverse black and white

likely memory as a toddler.. unless grab my finger counts..

but you ment pc game..

I dont know which one was first.
but the c64 in my household

we had many games..
of which I most remember :
*tooth invaders
*paperboy
*arkanoid
*space invaders
*boulderdash
*donkey kong
*lemmings
*packman
*duck hunt
*frogger

likely one of those was the first one.
There was an Arkanoid-like on the 64 called Ball Blasta. It was even better.

Plus the music was better:

I had several shoeboxes full of floppies, each double-sided, and each full of games.

My favorites for the 64:

-Ball Blasta
-Loderunner
-Jumpman, Jumpman Jr.
-H.E.R.O.
-Every single Infocom game
-Below the Root, which was amazing and needs a remake
-Space Taxi
-Raid on Bungelng Bay
-Boulder Dash and Boulder Dash 2
-Gateway to Apshai
-Ultima 3, 4, and 5
-Archon I and II
-Realm of Impossibility

And many, many more.
