Is there any bad music?
might be a weird question, sure, but listen...

people say that your music taste is up to preference, right? which means... there cant be any bad music... someone WILL like whatever is playing.. even if its 2 rocks getting smashed together

Nope I've heard it since the start and I can name two that are almost listenable to...

Almost...

Just because you like it doesn't mean it's good... just because you like it doesn't mean others should...
But read the topic OP

It's about good not being related to taste.
I realize that, I guess what I’m trying to say is that you can’t really label an entire genre, especially one varied as rap, as objectively bad if you haven’t listened to more than a few things. They’re projecting their preference as objectivity. Someone coming in here and saying “rap sucks lol” isn’t gonna convince me that an artist like MF DOOM is bad.

Maybe I’m just too sleep deprived right now to articulate myself lol. I used to really dislike rap music unlike I actually started exploring the genre. And even if I didn’t end up liking it I don’t think I’d write it off as bad at that point

I challenge anyone who keeps saying “rap is crap” to name me five artists they’ve actually tried to listen to with some level of depth. You’re writing off an entire genre probably because you don’t like what they play on the radio
Here's something to consider. If you want people to take an interest in rap (or at least not hate it so much), instead of saying "anyone who doesn't like rap should force themselves to listen to [x] no. of rappers because I said so", why no do something like "here are a few tracks that got me into rap and I think are worth a listen" and then post some tracks that you think are a good introductory point to rap.

For me personally, I would love to understand what people find appealing about rap, because what I'm hearing so far is making me agree with the "rap is crap" crowd. I'd love to hear what you think are "good" tracks that are worth our time.
Alright lol

A lot of what appeals to me personally is the lyricism. That’s plenty of rap that’s just “make money f b*****s” but a lot of it can be introspective or have a pretty interesting message. Other artists are great at telling a story through their lyrics or maybe they’re incredibly talented with their flow or rhyming (MF DOOM). The instrumentals are also important to me. A lot of what goes on the radio now is just loud trap drums but there’s so much more you can do with it. Sampling is an art form in and of itself. For example, DOOM took that guitar sample from some random cover of Bowie’s Space Oddity. It’s incredible and it otherwise would’ve been pretty much lost to time

rap music is bad because it lacks the most musicianship. Its mostly always resampled generic beats with little variation. Listen to a rap song without the rapping and see what I mean, its terrible.

and if anyone cares to say rapping alone defines the genre then I got to say that also lacks musicianship, you don't need to be able to sing in key and have control over your bodies instrument, its vocal chords, rap is just blabbing on about topics such as money, drugs, women, etc over the horrible generic music which is most times not even produced by the rapper but by someone else and using samples lifted from other tracks, so that makes it even less of an original piece of music showcasing talent.

Theres a reason places like soundcloud and spotify are flooded with such low quality rap music, its even spreading into the charts and clogging it up like a disease.

That’s not the case for all rap. There are plenty of artists who use varied backing tracks and don’t talk about only money women and drugs. Some artists literally just made instrumental hip hop and are acclaimed for it

How are these generic and talentless? There’s a lot of work that goes into sampling, and not just for rap. Look at Daft Punk’s Discovery album. That whole album is basically samples so heavily chopped and edited to create something entirely different and interesting

I learnt a long time ago not to bother talking to people who don't like certain genres, about said genres. If they don't like it, they don't like it, and it makes no difference to me. Why would you waste time making a list of your favourite pieces in the genre, for someone who won't appreciate it? I'd rather make that list for someone who's genuinely interested, not some "change my mind" sour kid.

Bun regularly goes out of her way to talk crap on dead rappers or how much she despises rap music and its culture, she is not interested in hearing why you like what you like.

Off Topic is one of the worst places I've ever seen to talk about music on. Full of ignorant kids with terrible taste.

But it is... "good" or "bad" is related to taste... it can't be separated because some might want what they think is "good" to not be what other's think is "bad"

Just because someone likes two rocks smashed together doesn't make it "good"...

- Bob Dylan.
- Leonard Cohen.
- Woodie Guthrie.
- Johnny Cash.

Alright, I could go on for days, but you get the idea.

I think most rap is pretty lacking these days in comparison to other genres, making it a bad genre.

Off the top of my head, I already know one rapper who's said rap sounds the same. I don't think it's a new idea.

Nor does it mean that two rocks smashing is inherently bad.

Just like you may not like the majority of rap but to claim it is inherently bad is wrong.

The whole point of the OP is that "putting aside personal taste"
But I do think any music can be bad if done badly. Even setting "taste" aside.

If you meant name rap artists, well, I couldn't really give a fair account. I'd name Eazy E, Tone Loc, and the like, lol.

I don't think they're the best rappers, but they're the only ones I've actually listened to the beat and lyrics critically. The best rappers, I probably haven't heard.
