Maybe I’m just too sleep deprived right now to articulate myself lol. I used to really dislike rap music unlike I actually started exploring the genre. And even if I didn’t end up liking it I don’t think I’d write it off as bad at that point
Not my thing but it certainly qualifies as music

A lot of what appeals to me personally is the lyricism. That’s plenty of rap that’s just “make money f b*****s” but a lot of it can be introspective or have a pretty interesting message. Other artists are great at telling a story through their lyrics or maybe they’re incredibly talented with their flow or rhyming (MF DOOM). The instrumentals are also important to me. A lot of what goes on the radio now is just loud trap drums but there’s so much more you can do with it. Sampling is an art form in and of itself. For example, DOOM took that guitar sample from some random cover of Bowie’s Space Oddity. It’s incredible and it otherwise would’ve been pretty much lost to time
Oh my bad lmao. You said OP so I thought meant me. I did not sleep much lol
and if anyone cares to say rapping alone defines the genre then I got to say that also lacks musicianship, you don't need to be able to sing in key and have control over your bodies instrument, its vocal chords, rap is just blabbing on about topics such as money, drugs, women, etc over the horrible generic music which is most times not even produced by the rapper but by someone else and using samples lifted from other tracks, so that makes it even less of an original piece of music showcasing talent.
Theres a reason places like soundcloud and spotify are flooded with such low quality rap music, its even spreading into the charts and clogging it up like a disease.

How are these generic and talentless? There’s a lot of work that goes into sampling, and not just for rap. Look at Daft Punk’s Discovery album. That whole album is basically samples so heavily chopped and edited to create something entirely different and interesting
Bun regularly goes out of her way to talk crap on dead rappers or how much she despises rap music and its culture, she is not interested in hearing why you like what you like.
Off Topic is one of the worst places I've ever seen to talk about music on. Full of ignorant kids with terrible taste.
But it is... "good" or "bad" is related to taste... it can't be separated because some might want what they think is "good" to not be what other's think is "bad"
Just because someone likes two rocks smashed together doesn't make it "good"...
- Leonard Cohen.
- Woodie Guthrie.
- Johnny Cash.
Alright, I could go on for days, but you get the idea.
I think most rap is pretty lacking these days in comparison to other genres, making it a bad genre.
Off the top of my head, I already know one rapper who's said rap sounds the same. I don't think it's a new idea.

Just like you may not like the majority of rap but to claim it is inherently bad is wrong.
The whole point of the OP is that "putting aside personal taste"
But I do think any music can be bad if done badly. Even setting "taste" aside.
I don't think they're the best rappers, but they're the only ones I've actually listened to the beat and lyrics critically. The best rappers, I probably haven't heard.
