The horror game genre needs to be revolutionized.
Of all the genres in gaming, the horror genre is the most in need to be revolutionized.. Since P.T back in 2014, the horror genre has pretty much tried to recreate its style, and quality (and mostly failed). I think developers need to let go of the idea of P.T, and really change up the formula, and start creating more new experiences. Even indie games for the most part try the same formula. Many do not try psychological horror anymore, or try a whole new genre period. Some have for sure, but its a very small amount.

There are so many things that scare humans, so many things to play on.. Its amazing to me that both in the game, and even movie industry, the horror genre still hasn't really done much new.

Yeah. Oddly the "creepiest" or scariest gaming experience I've ever had was in Red Dead Redemption 2. Like in the swamp area at night there at 'night folk' that roam through the lagoon and you can have random encounters with them where they pop out of the trees and catch you by surprise. They look like zombies.

I guess it's so creepy in that game because the game is open world so you really aren't expecting it when it randomly happens, and the game is very immersive, so you're already well immersed in the game by the time the random creepy event happens to you

So I think the main components to making something creepy or scary happen in a game are #1 them being spontaneous and unexpected, and #2 the game being really immersive

They should do something like they did with The Evil Within 2. There is a mode called Classic Mode where you only have 7 manual saves throughout your entire playthrough. There are no checkpoints and if you die then you have to start from your last manual save.

Oh yeah… it isn’t an easy game either. Most monsters (even the common ones) can end you really easily if you’re not careful. Ammo is hard to find and even if you do find Ammo you can only carry a maximum amount.

'14 is pretty recent for industry stagnation tbh.

Every other genre has been exactly the same since like '09.

I was thinking of mixing genres with horror, or trying out whole new setting, and idea with horror. Something that full of tension, and mystery rather than monsters just coming at you. Something that has you on edge with sound design, darkness, and f-ing with your mind. Games can for sure be harder, and i think it would be good to have more horror games where you can actually fight back to whatever it is, rather that run and hide in a closet for 5 min just to leave it and die anyways. lol Which most games i feel do lately.

10 years is a long time for games i feel to be stuck in a formula. Also i disagree, i think a lot of genres have changes a good bit. Action Adventure for instance with games like Breath of the Wild/Tear of Kingdom, God of War, or Hogwarts Legacy for example changed up some things a bit. Genres like racing, or fighting i can see not being able to change much. Other genres i think has hcanged a good bit tho. Horror just needs something new i feel. Something outside P.T.

I guess if not having camera cuts counts as innovation. Which I guess is fair.

But at a gameplay level, the only thing that has changed is now every game has every mechanic in the universe in it.

It's true your average '09 racer wasn't an open world experience grindloop, but that's more because an open world grindloop racer is a psychotic idea.

The only game that scared me recently is ToTK and it's because of all the platforming parts where you have all precarious ledges and have to ascend really high into the clouds and stuff. That scares me more than horror themes.

Well more "retro" then "revolutionized"... back to fear and suspense of things scary... less gore

Re village and dead space were both horrifying, I consider the latter to be the scariest resident evil game.

Yeah that could be part of it.
