Is it rude to move to a country and never learn the language?

For example, let's say I moved to Germany or Japan, where the primary language is the respective country name. Is it rude if I never learn to speak German or Japanese? How long is too long to be in a country and not learn the language?

Well, I learned all the insults instead.

However I have a subconscious block which prevents me from recalling specifics about japanese save for what I can remember encountering in the past 30 years. For security reasons. Can't even remember the name of the gold plated cow udder invitro-fertilization device I made.

Whereas my Latin only requires plausible deniability and adherence to parroted phrases and meanings. Because I can very easily upset or charm using it, and it isn't an important language.

It is very rude, and while I don't know how Germany reacts to it, you'd certainly find yourself rather unwelcome in Japan, the culture there is a lot more shielded from outside influence, you want to live there, you better adapt to their culture, including language.

And they will still never consider you Japanese lol

Most Japanese people aren't considered Japanese to your average elite corporate heir. Some genuinely believe the yellow hats separate the 'true Japanese' who make and shape and direct society from the consumers who pedal the bikes.

they've got english habits and their 'bad english' is out of a handbook that used to circulate for impersonating russian operatives as a part of a two-person information operation.

I've been exploring all the other options like a responsible person, but it keeps coming back to 'these guys are probably English.' Which doesn't mean they aren't Russian operatives anyway, but that's different.

Maybe a little rude. Before you move to a different country, you should at least know enough of their language to get by without constantly needing a translator. It's easier to learn a language than live where nobody understands you.

I've always been annoyed at people speaking another language in public where that language isn't understood (which is pretty much anything but english here).

I wouldn't expect anyone else to put up with me in their country blabbering on in english...

I don't have any experience here to back my answer. This is just conjecture..

No, but I don't think there is any specific culture rule for it. Some people will be bothered by it, others won't. I only consider it rude when the person who moved near me gets angry with me for not understanding them. That goes doubly if they do speak my language, and get angry with me for still not understanding their poor pronunciation. If I am demonstrating patience for them, I expect it back.

I don't expect foreigners to learn my language. It's hard and by the time they are fluent they either going back to their country or in permanent retirement here.
