Is it rude to move to a country and never learn the language?
For example, let's say I moved to Germany or Japan, where the primary language is the respective country name. Is it rude if I never learn to speak German or Japanese? How long is too long to be in a country and not learn the language?

I don't know about rude, but if I moved to a country where the primary language was not English, I would learn the primary language to the extent that I could.

If it has got an official language, yes.

I guess in the case of US (that hasn't got one), not learning one of the two major languages, Spanish and English, would just isolate you, but it wouldn't be rude.

Yeah, it is. You should know a few words here and there after a few months. After a year, at least, you should have a basic grasp of the language, including the very basics. You should be able to engage in casual conversations imo :trolol:

I knew this couple who moved to the UK in the 70s. The man of the household felt he was above the working class. His wife was worse. She hated her neighbours, and refused to ever work or learn English. They only ever spoke Punjabi.

I don't know if they are still alive anymore. I do know the government, social workers, and council paid out a staggering amount in interpreter fees, all at taxpayer's expense. We're talking 100K-250K per year just for these two.

beyond rude.. you should be expelled.

a tourist is not required to learn the language but if you are going to work. study, live or migrate to a nation, certaibly of for over 6 months such a nation should demand you learn the local language at a level 2 or 3 before giving you permission to work, rent, buy propert, study, sell, marry into etc their nation.

I taught in South Korea for 15 years. Never fully learned the language. I've also lived in Cambodia and Thailand. Never learned the language. The truth is English is universal and its so easy to get around today because so many people speak it.

I've always respected the locals and their customs.

nah, usually most "natives" dont speak the local languages either but just the main country language

If you speak English in America, you can get the ♥♥♥♥ out of my country.

We only speak American here.

I suppose it would get tiring and frustrating. Some people are stubborn though and set in their ways.

I don't find that rude at all. But expecting the natives to understand your language, now THAT would be extremely rude.

Funny enough, US-ians never learn other American languages and always act like they own the continent.

Whenever I see Europeans that have moved to Brazil, they speak pt_BR fairly well in a few months. Even tourists learn a few phrases before coming here.

Now, the overweight rosaceous folk speaking very loud English are easily spotted as from the supremacist country of this continent.

Only if you expect people to understand you.
