Microsoft now blocking 3rd party devices
https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/30/23938206/microsoft-xbox-controller-block-unauthorized-accessory-error-0x82d60002

Wow, makes me glad they are not a dominant force in PC gaming. I mean imagine if they tried doing this or implementing this on Windows where the only hardware you can use has to be sold by them.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more class action lawsuits heading there way as they are now bricking devices people could have been using for years and have no ability to refund.

Seems reasonable to me, one of the very few advantages consoles have is the reduced ability to cheat in multiplayer, but third party controllers with the cheats built in sidestep that. So by making the manufacturers get their hardware approved before allowing use with their consoles they will stop cheaters, or at least make it harder for them.

I mean there are nearly 100 authorized X Box hardware producers other than Microsoft themselves, it isn't as if they are setting up a monopoly here.

Xbox can tell Valve not to use their controller either. Then you're gonna see one huge cry. This isn't about cheating. Wheels and everything are getting zapped. This is about, greed.

No they cannot. Xbox has no say on what hardware valve supports.

Sadly, Microsoft and Sony have been doing this for years, just getting more attention now is all. It's a way to prevent modding hardware and lower cheating.

I can see the reasoning of despising this, but I also see the reasoning on why both companies do it. Have you seen these crazy new modded controllers out there? Holy cow...

I think sony did it on PS3, but only blocked USB devices due to hacking. So there where a plethora of wireless devices that still worked. I'm not aware of them blocking any 3rd party devices on PS4/PS5 but I could easily be mistaken.

Although i've been using 3rd party PS4 controllers for years.

Ya, they blocked a lot on PS4 and PS5 most don't know about. But why controllers stick to a certain layout now for them.

This shouldn't block controllers that conform to proper settings, hopefully. But this is is target those with electronic aid. There's no way they can combat the mechanical aided controllers for FPS, but this will hopefully reduce the ones that are modded for "Other things".

Are you sure? I've been searching and i can't find any articles on them blocking 3rd party hardware. Not doubting you, just odd as i've used random 3rd party hardware, usb drives, etc on my PS4. I've never seen nor heard of them blocking anything on it.

I've even used external hard drives on my ps4 with no issue, keyboards, mice, etc.

Well, 3rd party hardware such as modding the console. Xbox does this do, hardware banning the devices.

Again, I don't think this will affect normal users. A standard hard drive, should still work fine. A standard controller, should still work fine.

Now, Sony 100% if working on the removal of app sideloading for its consoles, but that's another mess to worry about.

Now, if this is purely for requiring licensing? I feel that's a bit underhanded.

From the article this is already breaking fighting sicks, racing wheels, etc so lots of normal users are going to be effected by this sadly.
Next article: "Microsoft sets up completely new partnerprogram for 3rd party controllers. The pricing will be around 95% of official MS controllers."

:steamhappy:

Ah, indeed, I see the main culprits too.

Their modded controller boards, that give input advantage look to be the a bit wicked. Ya, I'd call that... iffy... Seems only their custom controller boards are not working, due to the latency mod and the button modding and firmware programming.

you all wanted your activision blizzard deal to be concluded by microsoft. let them build a monopoly and watch as they do all sorts of unfair things and watch as they laugh at you because you all allowed them to be untouchable at the top.

I never encouraged it, personally I thought it was a bad idea. It's also why I don't own an xbox.

Was there a some kind of Windows 11 patch lately? I like new Notepad changes.
Congrats to all people cheering Micro$oft slowly turning into a monopoly, after all what could possibly go wrong, when a multi Trillion dollar corporation gets close to being a monopoly?

Jokes aside, wonder why the FTC hasn't done any serious measures to avoid the current situation, my guess is lobbyism aka "legal" political corruption is still more relevant, compared to the average consumer rights...

This internet has ruined gaming. It ruined the music industry, and now it's ruining gaming as well. As long as these greedsters can control anything you buy, even 20 years later, you're screwed.

I'm seriously contemplating pulling all the plugs from these systems, enjoy what i have, and not a DIME more spent, on video games.
Please do. You seem to be outraged at basically everything that ever happens anywhere, so you might as well do the rest of us the favour of being angry on your own.

Yes, now... ;)
Hmm sounds like good news.

There are controllers that can gain unfair advantage in the game. The move can combat cheaters.

If a player got an xbox, there will be xbox controllers, no reason to be upset over it. Controllers are their selling point too. I think people would rather get a xbox controller than a random one.
