Why does humanity want to colonize space now?

Humanity can't even solve their own problems here on planet Earth, so why do they want to colonize space now? They will just spread their own problems onto other planets!

Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.
For that matter, you can also build an underwater reactor.
Which is a perfect analogy considering having to build a false atmosphere on a planet is basically the same as trying to build an underwater building.
Can we do it? Sure.
Should we do it? Is it practical and safe?
Eeehhh, probably not.

I can understand science fiction, but the need for exploration I don't understand, and humanity will just spread their own problems onto other planets.

I think, in a hypothetical situation where this would happen, humanity would spread its empathy and ingenuity to other planets. We are masters of our domain, we could turn a garbage desolate planet into a lush paradise.
