man, that was kind of a ♥♥♥♥ year for games
F.E.A.R was probably the best one, and I thought that was boring as hell.
NFS Most Wanted came out that year.
I love that game.

This is from 2004 and easily one of the best games ever made. A sequel to the first (proper) stealth game ever, too, and to this day, one of the most proper ones, if not the most proper one. A mission from this game has an entire Wikipedia page about it, similar to the following, although that one is only because of politics and controversy, more or less:

You can't really say that about many games, can you? In fact, nothing else comes to my mind.
Of course, there's also this and it's actually from 2005:

An amazing game, one of the most revolutionary and legendary ones.
Lastly:

It's from 2004, but another legendary game, very simple (in the best sense of the word) and yet incredibly fun, also a sequel to the first FPS that actually wasn't just a compilation of corridors with enemies which also makes it one of the most revolutionary games.
All of these games not only held up perfectly nearly 20 years later, but they're much better than the vast majority of newer games. I cannot recommend them enough, but especially Thief: Deadly Shadows which also deserves it the most because of how criminally underrated and unpopular the entire franchise is, especially this 3rd title which I actually enjoyed by far the most overall.
If you were thinking of games you could play in 2005, not necessarily released in or around 2005, then there are also these:

Also some of the best games out there to this day.
Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood
It can be a game released during that year. Or a game's storyline can take place during that era. Or it can be a game released during-, or before 2005, and played that year.
