I was mostly into racing/driving games as a kid, so there usually were no boss levels. Earlier in my childhood I rarely even played campaigns. I'd just play split-screen multiplayer with my sisters.

In Great Giana Sisters (actually, the Mario spritehack), I just stood at the start of one of the dungeon levels to listen to the rockin BGM.

Until the spider/tick boss somehow wrapped around from the end of the stage and came up behind me at the start. I almost crapped myself.
