Because often times you don't need to. I keep using the same fork for about a week until I decide fo finally wash it. If you're concerned about bacteria, it's not so bad as to it's going to kill you. A week is the most I am willing to eat at the same dish without washing it. Been doing fine, if anything, it makes my immune system stronger.

There are plenty of things that should never go in the dishwasher. Primarily knives and cast iron or carbon steel stuff. Also, wooden stuff should be hand washed.
Doing dishes is a basic life skill, the same as cooking and cleaning. Men who can't do it aren't real men. *insert Heinlein competence quote here*
