Would you like to donate $2.75 to a charity you've never heard of today?
Um, excuse me self serve checkout at Woolworths? I know you DID NOT just ask me to donate $2 dollars and 75 cents of my hard earned money to "jump rope for heart" a charity I thought died out long, long ago! What even is this madness? They used to ask you to round up to the nearest dollar and donate that NOW they want nearly three whole damn dollars?! NOPE! And what's with constantly getting ambushed outside the store by some way too friendly girl trying to get you to donate to ANOTHER charity and wanted your damn credit card details to do it?! Can I PLEASE just buy groceries in peace?!

Charities are a sketchy business; plus, why should you trust them with your cash anyway? Throwing money at things doesn't fix problems, especially when there are still active factors that cause these problems.

beggars do too

no longer loose change they demand $1
The only time I've been approached by a beggar in the last decade, I didn't have any cash on me. Guy straight up didn't believe me.

Who carries cash in the 21st damn century? I did kinda feel bad that I didn't have anything I could give him though.

in euro 2 euro IS change.
also you must not give beggars cash ever.
beggars almost always are adicted to drugs, alchol or both.
(the small group that is not are mental patients without family or relatives to notice them needing help and reporting them to proper organisations)

even giving them items is tricky.. I kid you not.. even 2d hand shoes, or a pass for the bus, or a bible they somehow exchange for drugs.
-they give them to drug adicted dealers who also want those items, they pawn them, they return them to stores for cash (if new items), or they flat out exchange them with corrupt traders (like a kiosk selling buspasses that can be used for 40 rides.. buying back the beggers unused buspass for 1/4th of what it's worth)

what you should offer them is what they cannot turn into cash and no cash.
-take them to a diner and have them order whatever they want.. but have them eat it in front of your eyes.
-take them to a swimming pool so they can get a shower
-take them to a barbershop to get a haircut
-take them to a 2d hand clothing shop for a new set of clean clothes. (make sure they walk out in them)
-some shelters ask a small amount per night, you could go there with them and pay to the porter his fee (a few days upfront if need be) that way he has a place to sleep

non of that needs cash.. it does need an hour of your time and 10-100 euro.

I never did understand why this was so blasted important. There are a billion schools of ethical thought out there but when it lets you be a cheapskate who won't give a five to a guy who is literally starving to death, all the sudden everyone is an act utilitarian. And a cynical one, at that.

How about I give him money because:

- It makes me feel good (emotivism)
- I can tell it's the right thing to do (moral sense)
- Giving to the poor is a natural consequence of the natural world (moral realism)
- Giving somebody money will generally improve their situation (rule utilitarianism)
- Regardless of outcome, I do it with intent to improve his situation (Kantian)
- the Bible commands it (divine command)

If I want to give money (and I give a few bucks to the homeless sometimes) even though it will probably be for their drugs or booze, but if I feel like it that's when I give. I rarely give to organizations asking for money... except maybe the army cadets but they ask for empty soda cans not money and I always have a trash bag of it that I feel cheap to go put in the machine loll.

I've seen charities that over spend on a weekly basis on 'wine, pizza and cake' as well as over pay their employees/CEOs etc. It makes me sceptical - so I don't bother personally.
those charities don't really help anyone anyways.

Charities have been disappointing to me. You'd be surprised how much percentage of donations actually go into the charity (and it can be seen in the disclaimers). It's the one reason why I avoid charity fun runs as if lucky, only 10-15% goes towards the good cause whereas the rest goes to the company.

The worst are major companies buying sponsorships from charities to use their branding for marketing reasons more than finding to the actual charity.
So I got one for the local police here today... raise funds to support

1- Grant writing to pursue department needs

2- purchase safety items & training officers

3- Fund K9 and Bike units

4- Support community programs

5- State of the art crime fighting equipment <capes and tights?>

I would think 2 would be pretty basic to being an officer in the first place, taxes should cover that stuff.
4 seems like they want us to pay for their generosity toward the community?
3 well that seems the most reasonable
5 honestly they are militarized enough for a small mountain town, they already have riot gear and crap... they don't need a tank

But what the heck is the Grant writing thing? They need to pay someone to apply for more free money and need someone else to pay for that? I mean what?

Sounds like nonsense they want to make sound good but it's a fail try. Not like they are volunteer or anything, they are a private company running the police hired by the municipality.
