It's easier to see how fake it is when you're not steeped in it all the time, in my experience.
Another way is to watch all the "Got Talent" shows from all the other countries as well as "America's". They are all exactly the same, with different judges. It's very surreal when you finally "see" it.
more like "who's a marketable personality"
remember william hung from american idol?

dude didn't need to win to get a record deal... and it was never about winning... it's all a sham to scout talent and make money doing so.
The Simpsons, The Walking Dead, and Ashoka (sp?) aren't pretending to be reality.
unless you were responding to me and think the simpsons is real?
What are TV shows
my response is:
all of them
my counter-question is:
which do you think are not?
I can't think of many. The sports, weather, traffic, and lottery announcements?
Yeah, that's all I can think of.
I've heard credible explanations about all the Pickers shows and Storage Wars and Hometown HGTV shows being everything from completely fake to seriously truth-stretching.
Ben and Erin on Hometown seem genuinely nice. But are they? F if I know.
If it's on a television, I don't trust it.
I trust "how to build a concrete block foundation wall" by anywhere from five to fifty different, reputable tutorial makers on YouTube more than anything on TV. Or name your subject.
Ryan Hall Y'all more than any TV or Weather Channel people.
they can only spin the wheel the "right way"...
