what OP said isn't completely wrong, but your not right on that either. Many Steam loco's could push the 3k hp mark towards the end of their lives in the 60's, even with almost non-existent maintenance. The diesels brought in to replace them struggled to push 2k, and were often unreliable. Many of the pilot scheme Diesels were scrapped before the end of Steam in '68, just to show how unreliable they were. (Claytons, Baby Deltics etc.. etc..) Some were decent but in too smaller number, and were still scrapped, like the Class 52's.
Many had to be double headed, to shift the load that their steam engine brethren could do single handedly.
The downfall of the steam engine is the excessive track wear and piston thrust, along with the maintenance and operational requirements, not the power outputs, reliability or traction.
You can also see that in preservation, many steam engines surpassed their design capabilities and "in-service" abilities, showing that had further development taken place steam engines, they could have been used for much longer than they were.
Ofcourse, the dirty smelly diesel road vehicles were favoured by the infamous report, and much of the railway was removed; Sad, that many of those rail lines would be useful today in reducing our carbon footprints and removing all the dirty road vehicles...

Oops!
I guess EV supporters just thought electricity comes from the wall
I agree. Many of the so called "environmentalists" don't seem to realise that buying food in waitrose, driving an electric SUV and walking around in primark clothes is just making them a Hypocrite. Ofcourse, if you so much as point such things out to them, your a right wing nazi and deserve to be shot
Wasn't some of them campaigning for more oil guzzling windfarms a little while ago? ....
And in my country they plan to replace all cars by electric cars at some point...
and modernise the electric power lines and stuff too, merica isnt set up for mass ev
hydrogen makes more sense if they can figure that out
Not exactly "green", but then, nothing really is.
You need to know Hydrogen may have the greatest energy potential of all known materials, but it is extremely dangerous because its unstable. Diesel being less volatile, is one of the most safest fuels to transport and is difficult to ignite. Storing or transporting Hydrogen, scares the cr@p out of me.

obesity- solved
pollution - solved
roads - one lane now down need big roads
healthiness - solved
Doing everything we personally can is an excellent way forwards, but what you can't do is tell others they're not doing enough, when your clearly not doing enough yourself..
If your still reliant on Oil in your life, what right do you have to throw things at people's windows because they're still using Oil in theirs?
You have, by your very words here, no reason to judge anyone else for what they do.
Companies are going to find their way around things and ofcourse people should be telling them to do more, but on a personal level, shouting at your neighbour for having a petrol car is downright pathetic, especially so when your driving one yourself, buying food at a local supermarket, or goods from abroad.
Why are obesity and healthiness issues? Let people do what they want and stop acting like they're victims.
Do you really think at this point that someone thinks cigarettes, or oreos are healthy for them? Do you think we don't know sitting on the couch is less healthy than taking a walk?
