Oh, absolutely! I'm hoping for this outcome myself.
I think we seriously need one of the alternatives to step up their game now, so that Epic doesn't feel they have free reign to go full dictator with Unreal's licensing.
Steam mostly sells Unity-made games. The only alternative is CS:Go, Valve's only other dumpster fire of a cash cow.
here's the list of unity made games i have installed in steam:
7 days to die
amog us
core keeper
craftopia
ember knights
risk of rain 2
rimworld
synthetik 2
valheim
vampire survivors
VRChat ( tho I haven't launched this one for once..... lmao )
even with my small library (not to mention that they are the only ones i have installed), that's a quite lot of games.
pretty sure some of my apps in android uses unity too.
this change may or may not hurt you directly as a gamer, but you should definitely say ♥♥♥♥ you to unity if you have a favorite indie games that is made in unity.
I like the part where the executives cashed out their company stock before making the announcement.
Gonna be a fun and wild ride to follow.
Unity's core engineering and development team is self-downsizing. The company is basically losing a lot of the folks who are about the only people who actually know exactly what is going on in their code.
But hey, the guy who, while at Electronic Arts, pushed loot boxes into FIFA, the one that Unity paid 400 millions USD to get as a CEO, can't be all that bad for the longevity of the company. /s
hardspace shipbreaker, dyson sphere program and starship troopers terran command are also made with unity.
damn and i have 'em wishlisted. ah well.
yeah it's the one that i liked the most from all these three. i do have other ones high in the list to get soon but i really wanted shipbreaker as well. i'll wait for a sale.
That was the first thing I was thinking when I first heard about this!
Yeah I've also had that thought. But their current management has been around long enough that it would have to have been an extreme 'long game.'
Also, there's Hanlon's razor:
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
