Basketball was only slightly popular during the 90's in the UK, most of us probably can't name a team beyond the Chicago Bulls and the Clippers or Lakers.
Maybe people like basketball because it's fast, tall people... Can't find anything else though beside the way of scoring points.
Yeah i love playing basketball too but i remember in high school there was a section of the classroom where all these like 4 or 5 kids talked about was basketball, i just never understood the hype about it
I think Dark Ace is right, basketball is a very fluid and fast moving sport, so that might be a reason. Compared to baseball and (especially) American Football, those are very much "stop-and-go" sports.
I'd recommend Rugby. Specifically Rugby 7's which is smaller teams and shorter games. A lot of action, a lot of violence, and not so boring.
