Why do US Citizens call themselves Americans if America is the name of the continent?
It's called United States OF America for a reason.

Time ago I heard a US guy talking about the word "Usonians" to describe the citizens of the US but the term never really took off.

A white american doesn't call himself a european american does he...

Italian American and Irish American are both common.
american rolls off the tongue better than united statesian, plus everyone knows what you are talking about if you say you are an american
Because the USA is not a country. There are Californians, Texans, Alabamans and so on. To call someone from USA you can simply say "Statunitense" or "Estadounidense".

It's a country but not in the real meaning of it. It's an union of states with different laws and such. Basically half and half.

I think what the emoticon means to say is that the USA is a Federation. And perhaps doesn't understand that it can be both a Federation and a country.

Usonian sounds more like a counterfeit playstation than a person from a country
