Why do US Citizens call themselves Americans if America is the name of the continent?
It's called United States OF America for a reason.

Time ago I heard a US guy talking about the word "Usonians" to describe the citizens of the US but the term never really took off.

Americans r the babies of the world. very entitled and selfish. they think their rules of their ♥♥♥♥ country works with every other country.

not knowing they live in a modern day police state 3rd world country mall with no free Healthcare.

I travel for a living and nobody likes americans.
usa s the toilet of the world. honestly lol

Nice attitude

just a troll trying to make a 'name' for themselves on off topic.

one of their posts a couple days ago talks about balance and having a beautiful day to everyone.

this post talks about the usa being the 3rd world toilet of the world and how everyone basically hates americans.

the exact opposite of the message they were 'preaching' in their previous post.

they think they are the only people to travel the world lol.. most of my closest friends aren't american. I also know many people in the US from other nations and they absolutely love it here.

just glaze over what people like this say or think as its mostly NPC nonsense.. like when they actually said they believe someone lived on only water and nothing else for an entire year.. :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

you are just wasting your time with people like this. they are to far down the rabbit hole and clearly have some kind of 'agenda'.

:GHSleep:

Because the term British American was removed during the independence of Great Britian.

Previously it was US Americans and British American. Now American just refers to US American anyways.

...3rd world country...

It is by definition impossible for the US to be a third world country.

All I know is we should replace Columbus Day with Vespucci Day.

The Vikings were the first Europeans to discover north america. There is evidence of this at L'Anse aux Meadows, a 1000 year old Norse settlement in Canada.

The Norse gave that information to the Templars. There is evidence for this from the Kensington rune stone, the Newport Tower in Rhode Island, and artefacts recovered from Oak Island. The Templars also operated a fleet of ships which rivaled the Dutch East India company which would come centuries later. Not all of the Templar ships were seized by the King. There was a "lost Templar fleet" and there's even a book about it by David Childress.

When the King Philip turned against them and killed them in mass on Friday the 13th 1307, the Templars still at sea were safe from the slaughter on the mainland. They kept enough of their ships to form a fleet and went north and made contact with the Vikings, and from them learned about the New World. This proved to be a great base of operations for the surviving Templars.

Christopher Columbus was possibly descended from Templars, but if not he definitely grew up in an area where the Templars once had influence. At some point in his life he came into contact with Templars because it is believed he had access to Templar maps of the Atlantic before he proposed his expedition to the New World.

Not so coincidentally, Columbus' ships all had flags with red crosses on a white background. This was to show any Templar survivors in the New World that these were Templar ships if they saw them approach. They didn't want any Templars still alive in the New World to run and hide if they saw Spanish ships coming.

Ignore the heathens who claim the Kensington Runestone is a hoax. It's just slander from the damn Wisconsinites who are jealous of our twine ball and superior beer.

because everyone else opted for a less obnoxiously long country name

Historically, as far as I know, in the colonial era, the use of the term "American" in English, was already common to refer to Anglophone America as a whole, much of it of course were the 13 American colonies. So after independence they just kept it that way.

Is just how language and culture works. Why do we call Germany, Japan or China as such if their names are completely different in their native lands? Same principle.

everyone else usually refer to what americans call "the US", as simply "america" most of the time in my experience.

You're assuming here that the US isn't actually US but just America.

No. I'm referring to language. When a country has a long name such as the United States of America or the Republic of Congo then the word to say the country that they are from is the last word of the countries official name.

Meanwhile countries with shorter names just twist the countries name a little bit.
