False Memories
Might just be one of my OCD things, but does anyone else get the experience of having distressing false memories pop up at seemingly random times that you can't help but ruminate over? These last few weeks, I've been dealing with a particularly nasty one that's been telling me I've forever ruined my life and online reputation by doing something embarrassing earlier this month, (even though I'm 60-70% sure that isn't the case) and it's gotten to the point where I've felt the need to seek reassurance via this post.

Nah, those are legit, it's your subconscious letting you know.

I'm a psychiatrist graduated from McDonald's, so i would know, you screwed up

"Ruined my online reputation"

Well if that happens you can always make a new account(s) under new names

Not so much "false memories", but I think having embarassing/not-so-great moments come back to haunt you is a normal thing. Just as long as you realize it's just that, a memory, then it's easier to get rid of it.
If no one has called you out for it by now, there's a good chance it isn't as big of a deal as you think it is.

I would recommend talking to a licensed counselor for this. Most recommendations and advice you are going to get here are either people mocking you, as the first reply did. Or, it is advice that is typically non productive or could have consequences.

Good luck!

If it's not that big of a deal you should dismiss the idea that the action you did totally didn't had any impact on how peoples view you and it should be fine, rip if it is actually something meaningfull that actually altered your life forever though.

False memories? Things that didn't happen, or just over-exaggerations of something that did?
Things that didn't happen, but they're only obvious as false memories given enough hindsight. If *all* of my false memories over the past decade turned out to be true, I'd be worse than dead.

I think it's common to mix and make up stuff unconsciously, our brains somehow tries to fill the gaps between our memories with fakes ones.

Not to mention that overthinking sometimes led to amplify the those bad/fake memories, like making them feel worse than what it actually was

You graduated Hamburger University? (A real thing)

I am impressed 😁.

I hear they have an excellent psychology degree.

That sounds weird, do you feel you visualise bad outcomes of things so intensely that they might be misinterpreted as memories or something? That's what I assume could be the cause
That's sort of how it works for me. An intrusive thought will come at the spur of the moment, something like calling a customer a bad word, or uploading something inappropriate to social media, and I'll constantly grind myself down wondering if I actually did those things when I really didn't.

They aren't wrong, you would not believe the amount of lives i have changed by advising to work as a mcdonalds employee

I can't really relate to any of that stuff, but I do have some false memories. For most of my life I was convinced that I was stung by a bee as a kid for no reason and I've had a grudge against them ever since. My parents tell me it never happened even though I swear I can remember the pain of being stung so perfectly

It's called mandela effect.
Having flashbacks of a gameplay that don't exist, or remembering something like your cousin playing a video game in a year when the game wasn't released yet irl or something.

got plenty of them, mostly through dreams that are so realistic that many times I wake up and start to search said people through social media and they are nowhere to be found
