Why does it have to be guns? Why not cables or pipes?

"12-gauge" means you can make 12 lead balls, each of equal diameter to the gun barrel, out of 1 pound of lead. This originated in the days when you would buy lead by the pound to make your own ammo. The gauge told you how many rounds you could make for the gun from 1 pound of lead."

Analogously, the other gauges.

This only meant something with black powder guns when those were firing lead balls, now days with cartridges it means nothing aside from the size of the bore. You can fire anything out of a 12 gauge now days, I even saw a vid of a guy firing a slug of silly putty out of his

That is partly correct. But the barrel diameter itself is derived from the specific gravity of the lead and the quantity. This diameter refers to ibs/12 lead as a ball. The diameter of the barrel itself is the same diameter as the diameter of the 12 bullets made from one pound of lead.

And of course you can't shoot just anything with shot. The shot is also somewhat equivalent to ibs/12 but is more flexible, that's true.

less than 12 is rare
It is sad when you can get more concise and relevant answers here over google now. With a much smaller breach of privacy as well.

Who still uses Google when Bing = Free Pizza?
12 is the most popular.
i tried 12 and 410.
410 is just a toy not a real gun, very useless.
12 is great.
The difference is directly proportional to the level of chaos you want to unleash. A 4-gauge shotgun will obliterate your target, while a 20-gauge will politely ask them to leave.
Any one of these is ideal for home defense.

Or starting a civil war. >.>

isn't it something with the inner diameter of the bore of gun compared to number of balls and weight
Yeah something like how many lead balls of that bore size would weigh a pound. Or something. It's stupid.

Hmm. It's like wire, lower is bigger.

Yup.
Shotguns are classified by gauge, which is a measure related to the diameter of the smooth shotgun bore and the size of the shotshell designed for that bore.

Russian military made bunch of 4 gauge shotguns when one of their factories making anti-aircraft gun barrels manufactured bunch of flawed barrels that would have exploded on AA gun but were fine to use as shotgun barrels since shotgun has lower pressure to the barrel.
If i'm not mistaken the lower the number in the shotgun the more lethal it's, the higher the number the more non-lethal it's.

Example this video about 4 gauge shotgun the KS-23.

.410 is good to kill small animals. Like rabbits, chipmunk's etc.
