Most people don't deserve the 8K TVs & Other Tech they own!
Aspect Ratio & Resolutions on TVs and Monitors
:Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen::Northmen:

I remember back when people transitioned from "low resolution" tube TVs (actually many of them pretty good TV sets) to "HD-Ready" TVs and monitors. And the whole transition to widescreens.

I'm still suffering the 'shock and trauma' and I'm still alive to tell you younger gamers about what I had to witness back in the days:
Bare with me.. Here we go!

Turn of the millennium and the immediate years after year 2000.

Me and many of my friends bought the best 32"/36" Widescreen Tube TVs we could find in order to watch DVDs and play 6th Generation consoles.
Shortly after, around the same time the electronics industry started marketing "HD-Ready" TVs 720i and 720p sets.

I live in Northern Europe, Scandinavia (PAL territory) the jump in resolution to 720 was not that great and there was almost no 720 content to get hold of or to even buy yet.

Visiting my extended family I witnessed so many family members buying these new 720i and 720p flat screens that were objectively horrible TV sets. I mean really horrible.
They threw out their excellent brilliant high quality expensive tube TVs and bought new expensive 720 flat screens with washed out colors, almost no back lighting, puny sound hardware etc etc.

As a gamer and as a tech enthusiast it was a horrible era. I'm still suffering from what I witnessed.

- People stretching out a 4:3 CNN or Local News Broadcast picture to a 16:9 ratio. Sitting through movies in disbelief watching DVD movies in zoomed 4:3
..Time and time again I had to show them how to adjust the aspect ratio to the content they were currently watching. Came back next time only to see they had reverted to stretching or cropping the picture.
Eventually I gave up explaining relatives how to use their new TVs and just set it to Auto-Adjust in order to let them watching programming correctly whenever the signal data and their TVs just happened to be aligned.
A lot of consumers were watching their TV sets the wrong way for years and years not even watching HD content. You gotta believe me. Crazy idiotic times indeed.

- Conclusion: I have never seen a transition in technology end up so badly in so many ways, in so many households as the Tube TV to Widescreen/HD transition.

It has been almost 20 years since the Widescreen/"HD Ready" revolution and finally, these days I'm no longer seeing this **** happening on a regular basis.

" THE TRAUMA ... THE T R A U M A " :lunar2019deadpanpig:

Bonus story:
A friend of mine had a large high res 1600x1200 excellent tube pc monitor. He threw it "out the window" to the junk yard and bought a smaller 24" 720p monitor for his PC gaming. :yygHappy:

..And to every ignorant happy-go-lucky 8K TV owner who only watches programming in 1080p:
A big F*** YOU ! :neon_happy:

Rant over.
I've been holding up these memories for so long. It felt therapeutic to share these old frustrations with you guys in Off Topic.

Thank you for reading the rant of an old gamer raving on about the old times.. <3

Wall of text missing the point.

If you are watching modern day slop it doesn't matter what resolution you are watching it at, you are watching garbage.

Imagine all the time you spent explaining the optimum way to watch a dvd when its laughable now, now understand that as universal to all such trivial things.

Imagine watching CNN.... lol

We only wish we had your refined tastes. OP, you missed the point. The point of it all, really.

Why would you even post that, if you missed the only thing that really matters?

Trainspotting level fixation on tech that rapidly goes obsolete is pointless, always has been.

Content is king, building the perfect set up to watch the modern retread of star wars, just a waste of time.

4K TVs are so pointless. Almost no one has a room big enough to accommodate a TV large enough to need that resolution, barely any TV channels broadcast in 4K so you end up with worse picture quality than you did with your old TV and consoles can't cope with 4K.

I know of people who have 8K TVs running 1080p and sometimes 720p.
Looks horrible.
They should have bought a projector instead for the immersion. Projecting on the wall for fun and the novelty instead of having a 8K TV.
The worst part is that they just don't understand that they've gotten scammed by salesmen into buying an 8K TV -_-

Edit:
Can't wait for someone with a 16K TV to display 720p TV content. It's bound to happen at some point. And he will brag about the quality of the picture while I'm just standing there saying "uh.. yeah, that's really cool. Congrats man! "

and how many people use their 8+ core computers to compile code, or even know how to code...

It doesn't matter.

Of course these things in the Opening Post matters.

EDIT @Locke:
Have fun watching your wide format Star Wars cinema copy in in zoom mode on a 16:9 widescreen with next to no sound
That kind of **** is what this thread is all about.

Old people wasting their money and tech illiterate people were doing some crazy **** back then. Are you old enough to remember Locke ?

Or maybe they were smart in areas that mattered, like investing in property and stocks.

TV's are a waste of money period, its not an investment.

For some reason I never considered I would ever reach a point where we are talking about tube TVs as though they are from the early 1900s or something (well technically they are, but you know what I mean) Crazy stuff. I suppose the Gameboy isn't super far behind

Most people, waste money buying monitors which exceed a certain refresh rate.
Cause they are biological not capable of seeying the difference. More then 90% of earth's population, can't see beyond 90fps. Offcourse you need one for the horizontal lines to keep up with the vertical lines on your screen. But you still don't see beyond 90fps.
