It largely depends on the game, I think. Like, if you're playing a Mario game, you might respawn until you run out of your allotment of extra lives, then turn into a Drybones, Boo or Eerie.

It is also possible you do not respawn at all and just end up with whatever sort of afterlife is established in accordance to the game's lore.

it's thief 2. everyone is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane in this game. even then, everything's died out and i feel like i live in environmental dystopia
