Besides students I've seen plenty of transients like this. They can't leave their backpack in the car because they have no car, and that backpack likely contains all their belongings.

Another good point. When I commuted by bicycle everywhere I had a pannier bag that turned into a backpack. A second pannier folds flat and opens up into a nice spacious shopping bag too.

I do not drive. I walk most of the time. Maybe take the public transit on rare occasion. If I go out shopping, then a backpack and a folding cart ends up being the easiest methods of taking what I buy home. Sometimes small things can slip through the gaps if it is one of those wire carts, even if you have a grocery bag, and a rolling cart full of groceries is not especially convenient to lift when boarding public transit though.

I do have to be mindful to keep my receipts after making purchases, since on very rare occasion a security guard might suspect me of being a shoplifter while I am exiting the store. That is somewhat annoying, but a receipt that establishes me as a paying customer usually clears up everything quite quickly.
