Gas station food gets a bad rep
I honestly do not know where that whole gas station food tastes disgusting comes from?

I mean the oil and junk are outside the inside is literally just another convinence store with the convienience of having gas pumps. Other than that it's a normal convineince store with all the snacks ice food etc.

some of the best breakfast and mid day snacks / food i've gotten were at gas stations.

If you're in the US and haven't heard or aren't here... Buc'ees is amazing. Highly recommend if you ever get a chance.

I believe that this "tastes disgusting" business would be McDonald's, kind person.
The fried chicken and chips at our local petrol station are amazing. Better than what most fast food places offer.

For me the bad rep is deserved but for different reasons than you listed.

Price vs quality, quantity and limited selection

This is why I shop at whole sale supermarkets.

Buy in bulk, pay lower prices, get a wide selection to choose from. Then visit regular supermarket if a few items are only available there, like super fresh produce that is seldom found in whole sale supermarkets.

Convenience store is ONLY for very rare emergencies, like 2 to 3 times a year. Then I only buy the bare minimum because before I can get there I will usually have figured out how to get by with less.
You can get 4 hotdogs for 2 bucks. Not a bad deal. Last time i went to a ball game i paid 7 bucks for a hot dog and 12 bucks for a can of beer.
Most gas stations here are more in lines of regular stores and have their sevice grill. It taste like you would get from any other burger joint tbh. Meaning its fine if you are on the road for hours.
The nachoes may be an exception, though.
I used to have petrol companies as clients. I was involved with a revamp of the stations to bring in higher end gourmet food partnering up with established department stores, restaurants and culinary companies. Personally I thought the food had improved drastically but different countries do vary their business strategy accordingly to their demographics and audiences.
You haven't lived until you spent a month living on nothing but gas station and convenient store foods.

Good times.
i think that depends on what part of the U.S you're in
Why does it have to be so dubious, man?
Give it a few hours then you'll understand
in my experience it's different. some of them are quite good. personally the service is just good overall. sadly it's not always from everywhere and only on parts with busier roads because of course there are people there
