It is an instinct to save a life in that instant.

Let's think about it this way :

Will you sacrifice your next 30 years of life, in exchange to bring back your dead pet?
Will you sacrifice your next 40 years of life so your pet will never die before you?

Both options are a generous offer because you won't die immediately. You get to live, but not a lot more. 30 days to make the decision.

That's a tall order to fill. I would like to reply 'yes I would' but deep down I know I wouldn't. I would risk my life to save my pet if my pet was in a house fire or drowning in a lake. Infact many people have died trying to save their pet dogs, cats and so on.

I think it really depends on the animal in question. I am not going to sacrifice my life for a grasshopper.

I would not do so for a rodent.

When you get above the rodent, it gets more tricky. If we were looking at a pet, I have put myself between my dog and a much bigger and very angry bulldog and didn't really think anything of it.

I am not going to stop hunters from going out to hunt.

If I saw someone raise a gun to an elephant (as an example) in my local zoo, hell yes I would do what I could to stop them.

So it really depends on the animal and the situation.
