If everyone gets everything automatically, where is the incentive to do anything?

I never said that we should get nothing for work, I said it was depicted in pop culture. In essence, the Federation from Star Trek is a communist society.

The real issue is in a communist society, everyone makes the same amount of money regardless of profession. So, the guy who works as a janitor at a hospital is making the same amount as the surgeon at that same hospital.

So, the question really becomes "Why should I spend 12 years working hard to become a doctor when I can drop out of high school and make the same amount of money?"

And this is where I think, at our current societal level, communism fails. It does not take into account an inherent laziness to humans. If someone can get away with staying home all day and watching cat videos while getting paid, most people would take that option.

In Star Trek, the idea is that humans have moved beyond this societal constraint.

I do agree that if we can move beyond that, humanity would be better off under a communist type world government where everyone is treated equally and given every opportunity to do whatever type of job they find interesting and fulfilling.

But we are not there yet and i doubt we will ever be there.

When people fear monger over communism, they either don't really understand what a real communist government would look like OR they are referring to how communism looked like under Stalin. I do agree we do not want a Stalin-type regime. But that isn't communism, that is a dictatorship with some communist ideals thrown in to look good.

Good points.

Communism won't work though in practice. Gotta let all the peeps make self-serving decisions to maximize their utility. Can't control the peeps. Another reason communism won't work. Everyone will choose to do jack sh!t.

Min wage destroyed jobs. Because if a job wasn't worth min wage per hour, it was gone.
it didn't really destroy jobs
and even if it did, paying so little to someone for their job is kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up

A job that was under min wage could be perfect for kids, foreigners, people that don't have to pay rent and just want something easy. Like say handing out towels in a bathroom, or pumping your gas

People think that systems are one colour, but they are many different nuances.

Communism relies the government instead of the people. And everything the government touches become expensive and inefficient. Why? No competition.

I think we want to minimize government in our lives, not maximize it.

And i'm not arguing against you, Darkie.

for both your own benefit and the benefit of broader society

People tend to be self-serving though. And a bit lazy.

Why work to become a doctor, when an armchair philosopher will make the same amount?

You want division of money, but what about time and energy?
doctor is never worth the time u need to study.. atleast not in money

I won't deny that there is a noble ideal behind communism, at least in an egalitarian sense.

But I just can't really support the economic theory of someone who was, for all accounts, poor and incompetent in financial matters.

So benefits? Immediate gain by mooching off the resources and capital gained by those with ability and intellect, then blame someone else when the well runs dry. Funnily enough that is what happened with Karl and his father.

i'm not saying it's feasible
i'm just stating the facts

also no, a philosopher wouldn't be making "the same amount" as a doctor, there would be no "amount" to speak of
a doctor would save lives, a philosopher would further social progress

capitalism does the same.. wood, coal, oil, gas, iron, fertile land.. all stuff that never belonged to the rich and yet they claimed it

No one is going to college for ten years and do a high stress doctor job every day for nothing.

When they can have no college, and sit around all day meditating on dreams and clouds while sipping coffee and playing video games

Do we want income inequality or leisure inequality?

there are already 1000jobs that make more money than a doctor that dont require 5years+ college.. whoever goes doctor doesnt do it solely for the money

absolutely nothing good comes from all owned by the government, Stalin.

The weaker our government is towards us the better.

Depends on what kind of doctor you are. A high end plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills is going to be making millions. The doctor working in ER is not making as much as people think.
