D3 did feel more shallow, and a bit too reliant on sets and pre-approved builds, but it's still fun enough to spec right, switch off brain and watch whole screens of demons go squelch.
anything like 3 that always needs to be online kills the point of a solo player, no lan and worse
and D4 looks just like D2R, maybe slightly more honed but thats my issue with it, it doesn't look good enough for me to be interested in paying 60 something bucks for it. if i want a Diablo experience, i'll just stick to D2.
There are good Diablo-like games out there and I hope there will be more.
Also, I hope there are more community efforts on creating games using libre engines:

Diablo 1: Hellfire. We don't talk about it.
Diablo 2: LoD post 1.10. Introduced Enigma, changed the game totally. Awesome!
Diablo 2: LoD 1.09. More down to Earth. No Enigma. Awesome game!
Diablo 2: Classic. Without LoD. It's hard, no mana potions, etc. You've got to love it.
Project Diablo 2. Enhanced LoD in lots of ways. Maybe bordering on straying too far from Vanilla.
Path of Diablo 2. Enhanced LoD as well. Staying closer to the vanilla experience.
SlashDiablo 2. Just Vanilla Diablo on private servers where BH and widescreen are accepted.
Diablo 2 LoD (Personally my favourite) with Vanilla.MPQ from Basemod + LeBron's BH + SlashDiablo's Widescreen. Introduces some quality of life improvements like gem, gold, scrolls, arrows, etc. pickup (no items) and many more. 25 fps bypass, etc. Picking another MPQ will grant you more, but questionable QoL's. Also has an editable config.ini (The 3 above can also be edited for SP).
Diablo 2: Resurrected. Patch 2.3 and 2.4 were basically Diablo 2, but with better graphics. It was awesome. Too bad we can't downgrade, but 2.4 is there somewhere for people who want to play Vanilla, but in a modern jacket.
Diablo 2: Resurrected. Patch 2.5, 2.6, 2.7. Has more influences from the post-original Blizzard team. Like new items, RW's, etc. Plays a bit more like Diablo 3 and 4. See Mosaic Assassin.
Diablo 3. Was somewhat fun, and very hard. RMAH was strange. One of the worst games ever. Always online as well. One of the worst stories.
Diablo 3: RoS. Made everything better. It felt a bit more like Diablo, but it wasn't Diablo. Lots of zoom-zoom action, etc.
Diablo 4. It's basically a Diablo 3 remake. Darker tone. Introduced MTX, open world, level scaling, etc. Cosmetics, etc. From a personal opinion, it's the worst game in the franchise. Can't deny it perhaps has great graphics, but I would rate D2 Resurrected graphics higher.
