It isn't gay unless you have feelings for him, although if it isn't something platonic friends in your area usually say to eachother I can see why it would make things awkward.

It's not necessarily gay if there's nothing sexual behind it, but I personally would find it unusual, maybe a bit too intimate and unmanly. But that's certainly a question of the situation. In our country you would expect an ironic "old farth" with a laugh or something. ,-) It's all a question of how well you know each other and the situation and of course the tone makes the music.

Love, in German language, is a very strong term, usually reserved for your partner, your kids or very close family members like parents or grandparents.

Yeah, kinda. The "three words" version is kinda >_> but when you're friends for 20+ years, and you can communicate in ways that nobody else in the room notices, and you legit can't remember whether some of your stuff is actually yours or you just never returned, ain't nothing wrong with a genuine "love ya bro."
