Bible banned from Utah school shelves for being harmful to children
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/utah-parent-upset-book-bans-gets-bible-pulled-school-shelves-expose-ba-rcna87450

"A 2022 Utah law that made it easier to remove offensive content from schools. The legislation was supported by conservative activist groups, including Utah Parents United."

Because of the atrocities mentioned and highlighted in the Bible and because of the complaint from the parent, it was removed from school shelves.

Thoughts? What people (especially conservatives who support such laws) say about this?

What a terrible idea....

Don't ban the texts. Let the kids read and think and discuss them. They don't need to be part of the curriculum but to ban them from school libraries? That sounds scary to me.

The texts are not the problem - it's when interpretations are enforced on people that it becomes a problem. It's when they are told HOW to understand the texts.

But knowing what is in them is not harmful. Understanding the ways they have influenced history, societies, wars, cultures, legislation, etc - that is good stuff to learn.

Books are not Religions. If anything, these texts are very useful to show how one book can be understood so many different ways.

What else are we going to ban then? 1984? Socrates? Romeo & Juliette? Anything I don't agree with? Anything that has ever been devisive? OT?

My thoughts on this topic are that I have read MANY books that, in my opinion, have no place on school shelves. This idea that "children should be exposed to everything" is not a good idea.
I agree with you, although I think that different viewpoints should be discussed in school to children. Education is the only way to eliminate prejudice.

How did this topic became about LGBTQ from Utah banning bible? :/

Where else but on OT? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The bible is easy to blame for every problem anyone has ever had.

Are your rights being violated? The Bible

Are you misinformed about where human beings come from? The Bible

Did your neighbors' dog chase you down the hill while you were riding your bicycle resulting in you flying over the guard rail, and your math teacher accuses you of faking being sick, and giving you an 'F' on your homework? The Bible.

Did you buy a copy of "White Knight Chronicles" from F.Y.E (out of business) only to bring it home, open it, and find the case empty, resulting in you having to buy a new game because F.Y.E didn't believe you when you said the brand new copy had nothing inside the case? The Bible.
What?

What?

My point is that people blame the bible for unrelated things, hence the overly ridiculous examples I gave that started off kinda related, but quickly devolved into nonsense.

The can ban the Bible anywhere in the USA but not the Torah. Jews have the ADL, Christian have nothing.
How many libraries have a copy of the Torah? Or the Quran?

None of them near me have any but also none of them have a copy of the Bible
People here are talking about irony, while it was always the left who first pushed censorship...

Every library that has a copy of the Bible technically has the Torah, even if it's not recognized as such.

The average public library also likely has a comprehensive selection of religious texts, including the Torah, Quran, Book of Mormon, Mahabharata, Tao Te Ching, etc.

I'm against book banning of any kind. Reading is awesome even if I am completely illiterate and can barely count to six.
A specific version/edition of the bible must be identified by its id. The Bible for Children is probably acceptable... for children. I wonder which ones they got rid of or if it was just everything called bible(Which would include the HTML Bible by Wrox Press that I have and isn't religious at all, though there are some characters unsuitable for children in it)

stop banning stuff and start parenting if you're worried about your kid.
The Bible was effectively "Rated T" in one school district for a couple of scenes deemed inappropriate for younger children.
This isn't banning a book, but a reasonable child protection measure, just as with age-restricting material on sexual orientation.

Why is this even news?

Many of the books that are being targeted are being targeted because they have LGBT overtones, under the guise of "protecting the kids".

In some states, teachers are getting written up for children's books that have ANY mention of LGBT in them. For example, there's a children's book that has two father penguins together.

NO mentions of "debauchery" like the lawmakers claim, no talk of sex, nudity, etc. But still, the book's caught up in the ban simply for having a gay couple in it.

In Florida a teacher is legit under fire for showing her class Strange World to her 5th grade class.

Keep in mind, it's a Disney, completely appropriate for kids. But still, she's being investigated for "inappropriate misconduct" because, well, there's an openly gay character in the movie.
