Can you tell it is going to rain by smell?

All over the internet, there is a debate on if people can smell if it is going to rain or if that is just total nonsense. It has actually been a debate in my family for a while now. Out of my family, only my sister and I can smell that it is going to rain. And we are rarely wrong.

But no one else in our family has this apparent "ability" and called the two of us full of crap, even though we were often correct. As children, when we tried to point this out, we would get into trouble.

But, it is true that some people can, in fact, smell the rain coming.

While I will not be running to my mother with this news, I did share it with my sister. I wish we could share this with our Grandfather as he was the one person in the family that would ask us to see if we could smell rain coming. But he sadly passed away in the 90's.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this information. I guess I had never really considered that my sister and I were able to do what millions of other people can do. By telling us we were being foolish, my sister and I just never talked about being able to smell rain coming to other people but each other. So, I was totally unaware that there was even a debate going on about this topic.

I can also smell snow when the conditions are right for it to snow.

I mean... you'd have to be an old lady living in a small apartment with no windows and happen to be in the process of canning or something...

sure it COULD happen... but it wouldn't in 99.9999% of cases.

A cat 5 hurricane is the real deal. She was scared sh!tless.

But again, the drop in pressure will cause things to blow outwards. And it doesn't get much stronger than the strongest hurricane ever recorded.

It's just interesting physics to me. You would think the pressure of the wind would push against the door - and it does - later.

wind pushing against the door is ENTIRELY different from it being blown out by barometric pressure...

so ya... later?

It's the same physics that makes planes fly. Faster moving air has lower pressure.

You're probably "smelling" the humidity in the air. It can't rain unless there is 100% humidity.

Less than 100% humidity = no rain

I don't know about smell, but oftentimes you can feel the change in air pressure when a storm shows up, especially in the Summer since there tends to also be a significant temperature change.
