Can you tell it is going to rain by smell?

All over the internet, there is a debate on if people can smell if it is going to rain or if that is just total nonsense. It has actually been a debate in my family for a while now. Out of my family, only my sister and I can smell that it is going to rain. And we are rarely wrong.

But no one else in our family has this apparent "ability" and called the two of us full of crap, even though we were often correct. As children, when we tried to point this out, we would get into trouble.

But, it is true that some people can, in fact, smell the rain coming.

While I will not be running to my mother with this news, I did share it with my sister. I wish we could share this with our Grandfather as he was the one person in the family that would ask us to see if we could smell rain coming. But he sadly passed away in the 90's.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this information. I guess I had never really considered that my sister and I were able to do what millions of other people can do. By telling us we were being foolish, my sister and I just never talked about being able to smell rain coming to other people but each other. So, I was totally unaware that there was even a debate going on about this topic.

I can also smell snow when the conditions are right for it to snow.

it's not a matter of opinion, it's a real smell caused by a real, tangible chemical called petrichor or something.

not only people but also some animals and birds.

Smell, humidity, feeling atmospheric pressure in your joints, the color of the sky and clouds; all can be good indicators of imminent weather.

You can tell by smell after it's already rained, so if the wind brings smell from place it's been raining before, then sure.

Well... I can tell by my sinuses and yes a bit by smell... mostly I feel it in my knees

I'm not right 100% of the time but yeah I can with pretty high accuracy. What I have never been able to predict though is how much or how long.

I'd say it's not exactly a "smell," so much as a particular quality in the air. It's like you can tell it's heavy and ready to burst. And it's distinct from just plain old humidity in a way that I'm also not sure how to describe...

I'm a bit uncertain how I feel about any of the theories in the links above though. Some of it I was like "yeah, that sounds right!" But then a lot of it didn't resonate at all and just sounds like Twitter science lol

Yes you can smell it when your knees get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up enough over the years you can predict it because your joints will start to hurt. I can feel it in my knees.
