They
If they refers to an unspecified gender, are people able to refer to themselves as they? Wouldnt that suggest they are unaware of their own gender?

Thats pretty funny. But I think that movie is referring to "they" as the verbage of multiple people. Where as i am referring to and an unspecified gender.

"They" sounds like something you'd call an AI.

I mean, If I was talking to someone and wanted to refer to a group of people I would use the word "they".

"They" is 3rd person plural, which is also the polite or formal form to speak to people here, in that case with capital letter. If they refer to themselves as individuals, they use 1st person singular. 2nd person plural was used here in medieval times to speak to noble individuals, but is the informal way to speak to many people. Somehow the second person plural is the same word as the second person singular in English. So it´s a mystery if You chose to use the more formal or more informal way to speak to each other. But i need to add that i´m no grammar expert and always had bad ratings in that stuff...

Yes words can have different meaning, I want it to be clear when Im referring to "they" i dont mean a group of people but a single person.
To refer to ones self as "they" in the first person just seems odd to me.
