I've tried it actually, and phytoplankton has a very similar flavor to seaweed/nori.

I think plankton are just any creature that can't swim against the current, not necessarily microscopic organisms. It probably just happens that a lot of small creatures are also plankton

I'm very sure I've had plankton before.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was a dish embedded within a puree paste and bubbles that was layered upon a bed of seafood; mainly small octopus. I remember it has an oceanic taste however it would most likely be a mix of ingredients and not just plankton.
