Get a VPN, yes or no?
What are your thoughts on VPN's? I have been thinking of getting one for my family. However, I am not completely convinced getting one is a good idea. I have read here lately some have been raided by the police and some people are still being discovered even though they are using a VPN. I do not torrent download but it's more of a security thing for me as I do not want someone spying on me. Another issue I have is the bombardment of VPN ads and reviewers being bought out for said VPN company making their recommendations useless. What are your thoughts, broth pro and con? Thanks

Sooooo, its starting to look like getting a VPN is a bad idea unless someone comes along and proves VPN's usefulness better than what has been said so far.

Unless people are overly paranoid... and lots are ( and probably for a good reason because they're doing something they shouldn't )... the only thing a VPN is good for is bypassing things websites have put on them ~for a good reason~ and are trying to do something they shouldn't.

Don't do something one shouldn't... and there's no real need for a VPN for general day to day web use.

Paid VPN?

That's a waste of money unless you have something really serious to hide lol.

Naw, just ad-free and decent speed. I mainly use them to evade geo-locks, but I'm not watching much of anything lately, so don't even have one atm.

Not really, free VPNs are slower than my grandma in a walking race, and shes dead. (RIP nanna)

If you want any sort of speed you need to pay for a VPN, otherwise theres no point in using one. Not everyone with a VPN uses it for dodgy stuff.

some of use them for work
This is true, I mean on my computer I have 3 VPN's simultaneously active. Does that mean I'm a crook? No, it just means I need to securely access and control company resources :steamfacepalm:

Your data honestly isn't that important don't flatter yourself. Only paranoid, gullible people use a VPN.

I wasn't saying that, I've used one myself long ago - mostly to bypass download limits, so I didn't have to wait hours for another download.

It seems a bit pointless to pay for one, though. Opera and some other browsers come with a free, built-in vpn.

And someone already has it, most of the time.

Get TOR. Besides a browser, it works as VPN too and is completely free. Just add it to exceptions, or else windows defender and antivirus won't let it operate.

Well, that's what I was used to think before I've learned something about what's done with our datas ... Do you know there is criminals groups who buy old hard drives to scan them for usefull datas from companies and even regular guys ? And that's just an extreme example here, but there is a lot of bad usages of the datas you leave for everyone to feed on.

Still, I don't use a VPN myself, not because I don't care about my datas, but because I know VPN are useless for the average citizen. They're usefull for companies mainly, but the regular guy have no use for that kind of software in reality. It exist to create a virtual private space on the internet for some kind of intranet networks for companies, but still being able to go on the regular internet from the same computer. In companies where security matter most, the computers don't use windows and are separated from the internet completely (in nuclear plants for example).

Make the average guy think he need a VPN is mostly a scam based on his fears to be spyed on. That's why you should always keep your cool and take rational and informed decisions. That's the main difference between paranoid and carefull peoples, carefull peoples don't let their fears drive them.

Pff, these people will not be interested in a hard drive from a random nobody. Besides, passwords obviously aren't stored there so the only thing they can possibly get is some nudes

VPN's are useful for playing overseas games online (I used a free one from JPN when I played Dragons Dogma Online) or Netflix. If you want privacy/to hide your searches from your ISP (who will sell them for profit), use startpage+anonymous view.
Unless your ISP figured out how to break encryption, they won't be able to see what you search for (at least as long as the search engine uses https, which all search engines I know of do). What they might be able to see is what websites you visit, but not what you do there... that is unless the website decides to not use encryption, at which point you might not want to visit it anyway.
