I'm playing GOW Ragnarok rn, and from a tech perspective the game is a little behind what could have been done if it were a PS5 exclusive, but the art is so freaking good that I think it's the best looking game on the market.
Now sure, some portion of people play with mods to make it look better, but I'm imagining they're in the minority based upon the millions of hours of video footage uploaded to youtube. All because the core gameplay mechanic of being able to pick up and replace blocks is compelling.
The people over at Lego must be kicking themselves for not thinking up this sort of gameplay mechanic when they decided to get into the biz, since it is such a natural fit.
EDIT: It's also my problem with BeamNG. It's a great engine and a great concept, but there's no game there. All you do is drive around on maps. There's a few scenarios sure, but there's nothing to progress towards. I can only smash a car so many ways before it's like "Neat... I guess." They could desperately use some focus on a career mode, instead of adding the 20th variation of a car that's already in the game with a slightly stiffer suspension.
Yeah, it kind of is, and therein lies the problem with graphics and games that rely on them. Once looking realistic becomes boring, then what are they going to do? At least games that follow a certain aesthetic have something unique about them that makes them interesting.
There was a point when PS1 graphics were mind blowing, now nobody cares.
