Social media is changing our brains?
https://www.news.com.au/technology/online/social/the-dark-side-of-social-media-baroness-susan-greenfield-says-social-media-is-rewiring-our-brains/news-story/480b43a510ccb79dfa09636bf5e4c0fe

Professor Greenfield, who is also a member of the British upper house, says the hyper-connectedness of today’s youth gives them shorter attention spans and makes them more narcissistic, more susceptible to depression and anxiety, and less empathetic.

It's very possible. She's been pilloried by others on both left and right for saying this.

I think it's possible but the effects of this won't be visibly widespread for many years. What do you guys think? Scaremongering? Or is she right to express concern over children's interaction with social media?

Right, like the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc, etc. when there was no social media. Totally riot free. (cough) Not to mention the 1800s and early 1900s as well. No social media then either. Or heck, the riots in Rome in 44BC. They didn't have Facebook.

There were riots in the 60s and minor ones in decades following. Most were small and contained and weren't mainly rich white kids from the suburbs who think they are revolutionaries.

Yeah totally bruh, everyone is out there sporting ascots with their country club jackets draped over their shoulders. /s

Yes, but to do what? Buy lots of drapes? Or something else?

Well I personally don't use any social media (Twitter, insta, facebook) and I choose not to get close to people who do.

We wouldn't have all these riots right now if there was no social media and also if we weren't all locked up for 5 months now.

This is a trickle down effect from the universities teaching useful idiots. Social media is a great way for the hive mind to connect. I don't think we can stop the wave we just have to ride it. Funny how a poison culture pill from an extinct regime is still going.

It is like a sniper that shoots a bullet from far away, but gets shot dead before they see if they hit the mark.

Yes that's it, all well off people dress and act like that, they all act the same. No adolescents would ever lash out against their parents. /s

You realize that your previous comments was generalizing and stereotyping protesters as "rich white kids from the suburbs", I posted an ironic comment to demonstrate that you were generalizing people and now you're trying to preach on stereotyping. You realize the irony there, right bud? Pssst, your hypocrisy is showing.

I was actually stating information I've read about those that have been arrested specifically in Portland that have shown a majority were from outside the city limits from wealthy suburbs.

Information you read where? From what source? Also, the Portland area doesn't equal everyone in the U.S. so again you're generalizing.

I believe it depends. I stop using my facebook. I believe i enjoy more using my ig and other social media.

Don't look now but Facebook owns Instagram.
I still on facebook..

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What matters is the contents. :FunnyCat:

It's simple and not really make me too busy on social media. I need just a quick look and some read. Real facebook too much. I open it sometime. I cannot read everything. Lol.

Worse thing is it makes everyone social justice warriors, you only have to look at the amount of people at all these mindless rallies with their camera phones, just waiting for something to happen so they can be the first to comment on Twatter or Fu*k Book about it and embellish on what happened to the point its all bullsh*t.

And that is why you should use Steam.
P.S Reading in the Discussion Forums is better than Social Medias.

First of all, I whole heartedly resent any article which begins by saying "We're ALL guilty of it" even more so when the article is clearly an opinion piece. I also get tired of the "wire" analogy, as if our brains a series of ethernet cables running to different places. It's a pretty over simplified method of looking at the brain, more so when you realize we still have no clue what consciousness really is or even why it is.

Regardless, this line here destroys any capacity for credibility her piece might have had "That video games are shortening attention spans, and increasing our recklessness and aggression"

Any article which pushes the tired old (and disproven) narrative of video games exacerbating or even causing aggression loses all credibility it would have otherwise held. For every article that says "Video games cause violence" there's ten more than argue the contrary, and have real evidence to back them up.

https://www.theesa.com/perspectives/esa-leadership-desk-science-says-video-games-dont-cause-real-world-violence/

There's an article, one of many refuting the violence claim. Here's another that refutes the claim of it destroying our attention span

https://news.uark.edu/articles/40981/one-hour-of-video-gaming-can-increase-the-brain-s-ability-to-focus

and another

https://neurosciencenews.com/focus-video-gaming-8513/

I also reject the idea that our online creations exist in some purely artificial world, as if by it's mere digital construction it is somehow non-existent. It's not the physical world, but it's certainly just as real, we wouldn't be here interacting with it otherwise and it wouldn't have such a significant effect on our daily lives and the world we live in.

Saying the internet isn't real because you can't touch it is like saying the Stars aren't real. An inability to physically interact directly with an object doesn't render it non-existent. Just like we can observe the stars, we can observe the internet and thus it is every bit as real as life, it's simply not the same thing. It's a part of our reality, not some separate entity.

I wont go into serious debate regarding the social media aspect of the article, because I myself don't use Facebook, Twitter, (Does myspace still exist?) and as such I have little to no experience or knowledge when it comes purely to social media websites like that.

So I will close my argument with some direct criticisms of Suscan Greenfield (The author of the article) Her book called "Mindchange" which covers the same topics in the article, have been mostly universally chastised by the scientific community for being an outlandish claim that has no evidence to support it, and I'll post references (Unlike Suscan does) to substantiate my claims

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3196340/Baroness-Susan-Greenfield-slammed-Oxford-colleagues-misleading-unfounded-claims-internet-damages-children-s-brains.html

http://deevybee.blogspot.com/2014/09/why-most-scientists-dont-take-susan.html

At the end of the day, the harsh reality for Susan is she doesn't know what she's talking about, and she's spewing wild theories with no scientific evidence to back her claims.

We've seen this time and time again, older people have a nasty habit of attempting to destroy anything new that comes along by blaming it for the worlds problems. At this point, it's hard to imagine who's even really listening anymore, other than the choir. Once you've cried wolf one time too many, people stop listening to everything you say. For me, Susan is one of those people.

Ah yes "Baroness Greenfield", the ultimate example of diversity hire credentials, cloaking plainly ludicrous opinions in pseudo science. She's been at this for a long time now, a go to "expert" talking head for bbc programs.

Sure is, why people would want to post photos of themselves and their personal information is beyond me.
I guess their lust for attention..."look at me look at me" overcomes their fear of the implications of using social media.
The dumb asses post enough information to allow crimes to be committed against them.
I say ♥♥♥♥ twitter, facebook, the whole stinking social media snowflake whiner machine.

If you think an upper class white woman on the BBC is diversity in action (wtf ???!!!), you're really not going to like doctor Vincent Magombe.

What kind of diversity anyway?

Colored MM that all taste the same?

Milk chocolates with all different centres?

Edit: I like one flavour toffee myself though.
