ah yes a robot in the future is going to care about what people in the past did and go out of its way to do some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
this is literally the same bullcrap as gods in religion
There's no way to prove it right nor wrong, therefore it must be right? It's an objective truth based on posits and unproven theories.
Only people with big brains (mostly hot air) can believe convoluted absurdity, "stupid" people can't grasp the complex rationale and just see the absurdity.
No, Roko's Bubblefish is functionally identical to Pascal's Wager, if you can't see how the structure in the logic for both is exactly the same, then that's on you. But to try and clarify just a bit, when people say that RB and PW are the same thing, that's typically with the inherent inclusion of the Many Basilisks addendum.
As for the technology it proposes, it requires such vast levels of resources and energy, that it would in actuality take us 5 centuries at least to get to that level of energy output, especially with all these Oil and Coal barons constantly fighting to prevent technological progress.
Also, I don't think you understand what it would actually mean to "colonize" Mars. We're not going to terra-form it, we lack both the technology and the abundance of resources needed to do this. The current plan for expansion onto Mars, is to build sealed settlements that can recycle air and water. Everything else that the people on Mars would need, however; be it medicine, clothing, food, bandages, and so on, would only be available via supply drops from Earth. If anything happened to wipe out human life on Earth, the humans on Mars might be able to keep going for another 30-50 years, depending on how many supplies they had left before whatever event took Earth humans down, but after that a slow death by starvation is all that awaits them.
Furthermore, the concept of humanity dying out as soon as within the next 30 years is entirely plausible. Between the Yellowstone super Volcano; which is expected to erupt again sometime in the next 15-25 years, the next magnetic solar pulse; which is expected to hit the Earth in the next 20-30 years, and the effects of man-made pollution, we'll be lucky if any remnant of our species is still alive by 2070, let alone any later than that.
Anyone who killed themselves because of a ♥♥♥♥ post on Reddit deserves to be insulted and disrespected. They already made absolute fools of themselves and lost all dignity by being so easily broken. Quite frankly, I can go and disrespect whomever I please, and you have no authority to say otherwise.
Finally, I didn't say that only mentally ill people would believe this, you seem to have inferred that yourself for some reason. If I claimed that, for instance, you only believe it because you're Autistic, that wouldn't even make sense, for I am myself Autistic. I also have SPD, OCPD, and GAD, each a distinct and aggravating neurological disorder in their own right, and even I don't believe this hogwash.
In other words, you don't believe in Roko's Burgerdish because you're mentally ill, you believe in it because you're a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiot.
As for Mars, yes, it would require us to focus all of our resources on it, but only a tiny handful of people are willing to do that, so that's not going anywhere.
I wasn't referring to climate change when I said man-made pollution, but you can add that as-well, which just makes it worse. Ice melting is the least of our problems, see Australia being STILL on fire, California being on fire once again, the Arctic circle being STILL on fire, the ecological collapse of ecosystems all around the globe, the poisoning of the oceans and destruction of coral reefs, this ♥♥♥♥ doesn't happen in a vacuum, and it is absolutely going to kill us all, but that has nothing to do with Roko's Bucketlist.
Furthermore, misspelling it is indeed childish and stupid, which is why it is perfectly fitting in this case, because this so-called "thought experiment" is itself stupid and childish. And I don't give a damn about my credibility in this conversation, because anyone who tries to un-ironically argue for RB has already forfeited all credibility they previously had.
Now, I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, it's not Roko's Barberfist that makes me mad, it's the morons who vehemently insist that it's true, and who subsequently get angry and make a YouTube rant video about it whenever someone explains how stupid their world view is.
I don't really think people are getting angry over it. What you are seeing is probably due to reactions to your comments. IMO, you are coming off as defending it as if you were invested. I mean a comment like this:
is rather antagonistic or defensive merely because someone thought it was a stupid concept.
So that's why you're getting blowback IMO.
Also is there proof people died from this? I decided to dig a bit deeper than I originally did... and started finding a lot of the "Deaths" are basically from the words of reddit users. Which I'm not entirely convinced are true. Like I said, doesn't help the Moderator freaked out and deleted everything to "protect the lives of our users" on LessWrong.
The Arctic circle isn't all ice. It's just a geographic area. Temperatures higher than 30c are regularly recorded there.
But yeah, it encompasses all the land around the Arctic, not just the Arctic itself.
This includes Tundras, mountain ranges and so on, and their have been uncharacteristic fires raging across these biomes for a while now.
Also, here’s an educational thingy that talks about that magnetic pulse...er...thing.

It's eseentially a chain letter of theories which is why it's usually laughed at but if you still feel uneasy about I might have a small solution for you. We do not know what exactly can even help The AI to be built and we do not have the technology for such a thing right now. Telling other people will not help increase the speed in which it will be developed because technology doesn't just pop out of thin air. So there is nothing you can do if you want to help and if that isn't enough for you, simply not getting in the way of someone who is developing the AI is good enough.
