Why do old people smell of cabbage?
Is it because their soul is trying to leave their body before they die?

Wait a minute. There's something unusual about the subway seat you just claimed. It's awfully warm, and a peculiar odor seems to hover in the air nearby—a stale, musty odor tinged with something as acrid as mothballs. You know this aroma: it's "old person smell."

the unique scent of the elderly lingers wherever they live and in any confined spaces they have recently occupied, such as taxis and elevators. Many different cultures have recognized the phenomenon—the Japanese even have a word for it, kareishuu

I don't smell like cabbage... I smell of old spice and rage. And rage has a pleasantly cinnamon smell.

.... I have eaten/cooked alot of cabbage, and I can't say I have associated that smell with any old people I have been around.

What kind of old people do you hang around?

What are you talking about?
My dad is 75yo and the only smell I perceive of him, if I can smell anything at all, is his perfume or his shaving cream.
Idk, but I think you're being disrespectful.

You're doing it wrong. You need to get close behind them and get a good huff with one finger up your nose.

I believe it depends on people lifestyle. I miss my late grandma. She really active even in her late 70. She never relax. Always have something to do and i notice she don't eat eat something unfresh and she always stay clean. I learn many old tip and trick from her. Even cooking recipes. She smell good even on her last day. I am not joking.

And i have one more grandmother left on my mum side. The last one. I actually glad i can help and get to know her more because she staying in my mum house. It's like my mum and her other siblings taking turn to take care of her. This one more interesting. She eat like young people but she don't have much teeth anymore. Juat soft food. I cannot wait to have some talk with her again. I hope i still got time before her time come. I want bath clean her body too when she dead. Hope i will be able to do that too. I did to all my late granparents. I learn a lot of thing. It'a really amazing. How we live, that how we going to die for sure.

This

And! I've never known any old people that smell like cabbage, I've known a few that smelled like bengay or some other analgesic for stiffness and arthritis.

My grandma went through four different smell stages; toffee, mothballs, farts, and dying.

Which is also a list of my favourite things.

I've heard this but I never noticed this. It's likely based on some old person that ate it a lot and smelled like it so it became a stereotype.

mothballs are one of your favorite things?
you need to explain that one, never mind the fact that I didn't even know moths had balls.
If you cut them off and put them near your clothes, it warns them that you're not to be messed with.

And if earwigs crawl into your ear, where do cockroaches crawl into?
The chicken coop.
