Cats never use to meow at each others, rather they developed it for us humans.

A cat learns to meow to get our attention, it will even keep adjusting it's meow to become the most annoying or odd if it doesn't get attention, till it does.

Then it depends on the type of meow to what it means - if hungry, wanting inside/outside, angry, warning, or just wanting a pat, etc.

The meow is human-directed communication. Cats have learned that they cannot communicate with us the way they do with other cats, so developed that specially for us humans to understand.

The meow doesn't even have to sound like a meow (if that didn't get your attention at first and they had to learn something new which does), but the concept is the same.

Some basic cat language to learn:

Short or quick meow - Is a basic greeting, Hi!

Multiple meows - Excited to see you!

Mid-pitch meow - A plea for food or attention.

Low-pitch meow - Complaining to you about something you have done wrong in their eyes.

High-pitch meow - Angry or in pain.

Drawn out meow - A demand for something, such as food or to be let outside.

They also purr, chirp, and even chatter, which has more meanings too. Being stressed, hungry, attention seeking, let me inside, when on heat, or if just happy.

Before mine turned deaf she would meow at me. And I would meow back! And it would go back and forth for about a minute. Then she would rub her face on me or the corner of a wall and I give her back scratches. After she went deaf though she would still continue meowing to get my attention.

Also yes, they will make lots of noise for food if you have not provided it for them. MROW!!!

They don't necessarily go meow. Some of cats go "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

While I was living in a rural area, the cats wouldn't show up until they heard the bag of food opening. Some of the dogs would come running too~

No 'Sup or Hey', just meow.
There was a study done with regards to humans being considered as animals. The person giving the lecture went into great detail about the behaviors, including vocals, of various animals being partly from brain activity, and the larynx' varying capabilities of adjusting for speech.
