The Thing. What happened to it?
If you've never heard of The Thing (1982). It's a good movie. They remade it in 2011, haven't seen that one yet. That link is a trailer of the 2011 movie, does a good job explaining the what. These are clips from the 1982 movie. Imagine this in a video game.

The game The Thing (2002), it was memorable. I checked and can not find who owns the IP to the game. Last known is Vivendi Universal / Black Label Games. The game:

It's a prequel, not a remake.

Correct. The 1982 one was the remake of the 1951 movie, and 2011 was the prequel to the remake. The origin was a short story, "Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell Jr.

The 1982 version was much closer to the book than the 1951 version because in 1951 they didn't have the special effects to match what happens in the book.

Thanks. I really had no clue it was a thing, heh, until I looked up a trailer for the movie to add to the OP. It's rated a 6 something on imdb and the thing 1982 is rated 8 something. it should indicate in the title what it is, to call it the thing (2011), common convention says that's a remake. considering the story sounds identical.

i never heard about the movie either, until the game dropped in 2002. that got me to watch the movie. i loved the story. not too often do you have a good story about a non-human creature appear humanlike so much they are indistinguishable. first 3 that come to mind:
* battlestar galactica
* terminator
* they live

and the thing is something like i remember from some scenes of silent hill 3 and other's from the series. but it can change shape, moreso it can have the bodily features that it needs at that time, similar to it impersonating a human as it needs todo that. that's my memory of the movie, yea i didn't read the book. it's not a story i see told much anymore.

EDIT: lol. prototype the game does that too

and it was the game that got me to watch the movie. it doesn't make sense. when acompany goes under, they sell their assets. I believe that Vivendi owns the IP and sitting on it, when they could be making money selling it, there's already a windows version.

I've seen worse.
Yesterday I read a review in here of the Bladerunner game that said they had no clue it was originally a movie.

that's bad.

my case. it's normal for a game based on on movie to be worse than the movie, or a movie based on the game be worse than the game. i played this game in 2002, before that time the thing (1982) wasn't marketed to me to watch on DVD. Also I remember it was longer than the OP shows, makes sense considering the person in the video beat it before.

there's reviews of the game out there. my guess it'd hit a review store in the 70/80's here on steam, but it's likely it'd be rated higher on a platform like gog

Yeah, and TBH I didn't like the book.

No problems with the name for me
If his first name was Isaac I may not say it out loud too much but it's just Phil :D

The Thing (1982) is a masterpiece of suspense and horror. Top 5 of all time. The Thing (2011) is a prequel to the (1992) film. It is good, I liked it, but it pales in comparison to the (1982) film. The Thing video game (2002) was terrible. Bad controls, bad gimmicks, and a very annoying enemy "thing-type" that was hard to kill.

The Thing (1951) and the short story that "started" it all are forgettable.

Interestingly, the 1982 is a lot closer to the story than the 1951.

I believe Carpenter's film is the original in the sense that it created the original. Like how Van Gogh must have painted hundreds of sunflowers until he arrived at the sunflower, Carpenter created the most thing of The Thing's created.

All previous versions dissolve in it's dark brilliance.
