It's a prequel, not a remake.
The 1982 version was much closer to the book than the 1951 version because in 1951 they didn't have the special effects to match what happens in the book.
i never heard about the movie either, until the game dropped in 2002. that got me to watch the movie. i loved the story. not too often do you have a good story about a non-human creature appear humanlike so much they are indistinguishable. first 3 that come to mind:
* battlestar galactica
* terminator
* they live
and the thing is something like i remember from some scenes of silent hill 3 and other's from the series. but it can change shape, moreso it can have the bodily features that it needs at that time, similar to it impersonating a human as it needs todo that. that's my memory of the movie, yea i didn't read the book. it's not a story i see told much anymore.
EDIT: lol. prototype the game does that too
and it was the game that got me to watch the movie. it doesn't make sense. when acompany goes under, they sell their assets. I believe that Vivendi owns the IP and sitting on it, when they could be making money selling it, there's already a windows version.
Yesterday I read a review in here of the Bladerunner game that said they had no clue it was originally a movie.
my case. it's normal for a game based on on movie to be worse than the movie, or a movie based on the game be worse than the game. i played this game in 2002, before that time the thing (1982) wasn't marketed to me to watch on DVD. Also I remember it was longer than the OP shows, makes sense considering the person in the video beat it before.
there's reviews of the game out there. my guess it'd hit a review store in the 70/80's here on steam, but it's likely it'd be rated higher on a platform like gog

The signs we're getting old
Based on a book
♥♥♥♥ (the author's last name) has always been a little tough for me.
No problems with the name for me
If his first name was Isaac I may not say it out loud too much but it's just Phil :D

The Thing (1951) and the short story that "started" it all are forgettable.

All previous versions dissolve in it's dark brilliance.
