Two monitors of different sizes
Basically, I want a second monitor that would be portrait instead of landscape. But rather than do the goofy sideways T arrangement that just feels ridiculous AF to me (no offense if you have this setup), I want the portrait one to be half size, half resolution, so the dpi matches and it's almost the same height (actually slightly smaller).

Question is, how do I mount two monitors like this, when clamping to the table is a no go?

Seems if I got a two monitor stand, I wouldn't be able to balance them, as the larger one would be much heavier.

By my calculations, trying to wall mount independently would put about 2.5 inches between the monitors (existing one is 28", at 16:9, this comes to 28/2 cos tan-1 9/16, or about 12 inches to the edge, new one would be 14/2 sin tan-1 9/16, or about 3.5 inches, for a total of 15.5", when the studs are 18" apart), which I'm not crazy about.

I could go for a triple, and put another identical small monitor on the other side, but I can't think of a lot to do with it. I could keep some explorer windows open, I guess, but that's a pretty low utility to cost (and energy) ratio when my text editor already has an explorer built in.

Third option, I could get a separate stand, but I kinda hate this option because hardly any are narrower at the base than a 7" wide monitor, and the ones that are are pretty expensive for some reason.

The reason I can't use a desk clamp is because my "desk" is not a typical wood desk. It's one of those Lifetime plastic tables, which I bought because they're huge by desk standards, cheap by desk standards and hold literally a ton (they're rated for 1000lbs, but reviews state that they can get up to around 2500 before failure). Best move ever (I bought two of them, actually)... Except there's not a lot of room to clamp anything onto them on the underside, and I dunno how they'd react to having holes drilled in them.

Any thoughts?

So the second monitor would be a square ? why would it matter if it's landscape or portrait if its square ?

Physically unplugged it from GPU and replugged it, and that fixed it.

I like happy endings. Just needed to reinitiate the Windows handshake.

Nah, it's also 16:9, but when you turn it portrait it's almost the same height as the existing monitor.

Ha, I got it to work finally.

Plugged in the new, unplugged the existing, plugged existing back in, THEN I had to do the settings again in Windows.

Now I've got a 28' 4k landscape and a 14" 1080p portrait.

Actually, I didn't notice this before I ordered but the new one is 1920x1200 (16:10) instead of 1080p exactly, so I actually get a little wider screen when I move it to portrait and set it to 1200x1920. So that's nice. As far as I can tell, the DPI is pretty close to the same, even though that should make it slightly higher. I was working with pretty approximate values anyway. The new one is 14" even where I think the existing is 27.6" or something.

Just make sure it's vesa mountable, and buy a cheap generic vesa mount.

Vesa is square bolt pattern so you could *screw it in sideways* for portrait

large bolts into a block of wood underneath.

No idea what a "lifetime" plastic table is meh.

*oh its one piece injection mold pie tin, would have drilled/epoxied wood clamp sandwich for a secure mount foundation.

Lifetime is the brand. I liked to a listing for one up above, though I'm not positive that's my exact model. Looks similar though.

The manufacturer claims.
"This table has a uniform distributed load capacity of 2,000 pounds and a center load capacity of 400 pounds."

Would sound like the plastic could take some large bolts and plywood sandwiched together.

So I've discovered 1200 pixels isn't really wide enough. I have a ton of horizontal scrollbars when I put stuff on this thing. It was a neat idea, but I think what I'm going to try next is moving setting the new one landscape and moving it above above and to one side, like a folder tab. Maybe if I decide I need another still, I'll put the new one on the other side so it's a big rectangle.

This new monitor only weighs a few pounds--I should be able to use a weighted vertical two monitor stand and an adapter thing to move it off to the side without throwing everything off balance too much.
