Yes, I know a lot of people aliens like this, too.
Could just be difficulty between introverts and extroverts understanding each other. I have introvert friends and like half or more of our texts are literally one to four messages long. Usually if I see it's read, that's good enough for me.
But I have extrovert friends who text much longer conversations, and it's usually because they keep it going. Which doesn't mean I don't like talking to them, just, I don't have a lot to say, I guess.
I dunno if your cousins are extroverts or introverts, but fwiw, that's how it is with me. That and seven bucks will get you a latte, I guess. Maybe you could try being more active in the conversation.
It's more like the expectation that they want to tell me something or want to have a conversation.
Most of the time whenever someone text me like "How are you?" Or "Hey man, how you doing?" I *assume* that they want to start a conversation. My usual reply is like "I'm doing fine. What's up?" And then we just talk about whatever.
But for my cousins, after I reply, I just get left on read. Which makes me wonder what even was the point of the text.
I forgot to mention this but after I reply back, I notice that they didn't even SEE or READ the message according to instagram/ Facebook messenger which makes me suspicious. Which at this point its more like I'm left in the *dark.*
