How do you tell if someone has been born in the country they live in?

I'm curious, as someone who has never left the country I was born in, how would you tell something like that? Their birth certificate? Or would it not show?

What about if they changed their legal name by going to a lawyer? Same answer?

As a Brit I instantly see people with a stripy blue jumper carrying a large stick of bread and I think " cheese eating surrender " its how Europeans are.

Well, it is not completely reliable, but a good tell is their accent. You acquire your accent from the way people talk around you during your formative years, so you tend to share your accent with the people who share your geographical region. Sometimes you can even localize somebody down to a specific borough within a city, as is the case with the Brooklyn accent, which suggests origin from New York City in New York State in the U.S.A. I imagine most people who are aiming to learn a new language want to speak it indistinguishably a native would if possible, but simply can't manage if they exhibit a foreign accent.

Of course, this requires you to be familiar with the various accents of the specific nation they claim to be born from, or at least enough accents to know that somebody speaking like a cockney isn't very likely to be a fellow K.G.B. agent.
