Female Armor in Video Games
It’s a tale as old as time- female armor is generally never realistic and often leaves far less to the imagination.

To be clear- I don’t mind, given it is to be expected and there is nothing wrong with wanting to be attractive in a game, but as I’ve grown older, I’m often just disappointed when I see it. I find something like the Sisters of Battle, armored Samus, Lady Maria, etc to be far more interesting and intimidating than a revealing outfit. Perhaps it is a matter of perception as to whether you view your character as a dress-up doll or as a person. Whether you want to be cool vs alluring.

So where do you stand? Is “less more” to you, or do you prefer realistic/heavy armor. In either case, I would be curious to hear why. How do you want your character to look/be perceived?

I think the stereotypical female "armor" in games is too distracting and obviously unrealistic (I wish it at least gave the illusion of some sort of protection, but nope, can't have that when we can show skin), so I don't like it. It's not a big deal or anything, I just don't personally like it, but also won't loose any sleep over if it stays or goes away.

Why should it be expected?

Bikini armor is dumb, unrealistic, impractical, sexualized and just caters to a male gaze whilst reinforcing gender stereotypes.

I roll my eyes and play the male character.

This is why you always play as the males, they always get the cool armor and designs

And that's your opinion... doesn't mean it's true, or that it matters to others that like that.

What’s untrue about what she said?

Prove that it's true... history can't even prove what Cleopatra looked like according to some... there might of been such armor somewhere... show me it never was.

To be fair, there is a huge difference between sexy, feminine armor and the stripper armor you find in so many games.

I prefer revealing armor, not even gonna lie.

On the positive side, there are plenty of games where armor doesn't affect the looks of a character; only outfits do. And you generally have a decent variety, so there's no need to run around in evening dresses or swimsuits.

Yes, not all games distinguish between armor and outfit. And sometimes the options aren't great. But, as always, not all games are the same.

EDT: Still, Final Fantasy XIII-2 stuck out to me: while the armor had to be unlocked through a third-party patch on the PC, I gave both characters an ACTUAL armor. It almost looked like a powered armor even, which was a bit too much -- but out of the options provided, it felt like a great fit for a team that was hopping through time in an attempt to fix a broken timeline, which usually involved a lot of heavy-duty combat.
Serah's version was more form-fitting (and yeah, just like the next guy, I won't complain) and felt a bit lighter, but not much, but it was clearly the same armor.

Well and you remind me of stats too. Those can be critical for success and I’ve definitely seen uglier gear raise stats before. Which… sounds… 🤔

Yeah, that reminds me of Neptunia, where I was in fact running around in swimsuits, at least initially. I guess to make up for looking ridiculous, they gave minor stat bonuses to the swimsuits; later in the game, I didn't care about these anymore (but I had to watch the "auto-equip", since it was technically the best outfit... but that turned a bit useless anyway, as it would come to prefer those crazy "large benefit, large penalty" items.

It's hardly an armor when you can see more skin than the armor itself...

I think if it fits the theme of the world/game/etc then its fine.

also only females have skimpy 'armor'.. ever read or seen conan movies/books. Look at conan himself. basically a loin cloth with a sword strapped on his back. dude was 2/3 naked with massive muscles all over. why aren't we complaining about this? This also happens a lot in fantasy.

Galadriel in the new rings of power series has full armor on. it fits the world. 1/2 naked female armor would not work in that setting. Of course a lot of the orcs are indeed 1/2 naked in that setting too, so why not complain about them being 'naked'.. because they aren't 'sexy' to you.? so orcs 1/2 dressed wearing tattered clothes or loin clothes no issues dont even notice, a female walks in with small armor or 1/2 dressed and we have a problem. hold the story.

the world of conan where everyone is 1/2 dressed, smaller armor or no armor works.

again. if it fits the theme who cares.

stop trying to make 'moral' arguments that fit our IRL reality and put them into pure fantasy settings. it doesn't work.

I’m a fan of there being variation between the male and female versions of an armor set. I think it’s pretty boring when characters look identical in a full armor set regardless of gender, which is why I’ve frequently gone helmet-less in a lot of games.

I think the most ideal scenario is when there are specific armor sets designed for either a male or female character. Take Knight Artorias and Ciaran, from the original Dark Souls, as a great example of this. Their sets are tailored specifically to them as individuals, and this aspect is reflected when the player equips their sets. The Artorias set is more fitting to the bulky frame of a male character, while the elegant and feminine Lord’s Blade set is very much made for a female character. Sure, you can choose to swap this and put the sets onto a character of the opposite gender, but I’d argue that they end up looking not as good. And that makes the armor sets feel more unique, and give a sense of purpose to actually playing choosing a gender for your character.

I’ve never played a game with bikini armor, and I don’t really care to. That’s just fan-service that takes me out of the experience. But I also don’t think that it’s necessarily a hard line in the sand, where it has to be fully-covered or nothing-at-all. I think there’s certainly room for experimentation. I did grow up playing RuneScape, which had certain armor sets like the Verac set and the Bandos set that were revealing to some degree, and I think they look awesome because they were still designed to be actual armor. They also keep it fair by having an equal amount of “exposure” for both male and female characters.

In the end, they are fantasy games ultimately. People get too caught up on trying to debate the realism of whether a set of armor would provide legitimate protection against attacks or not, all the whole their character is fighting a dragon whose fire breath could super-heat the metal plating and give them third-degree burns across their whole body or roast their bare skin to ash. It’s not realistic _period,_ full stop.
